31st January was the original date for this tie

We have friends in both camps, so were championing neither - we just wanted a result after 90 minutes, rather than face the dreaded extra-time a draw would have made us endure. The football was  palatable enough, it was just that around 9:00pm it started to get really chilly and we didn't relish the thought of the extra half hour!

It took the players a while to get going, but credit where credit is due, both teams tried to play a passing game, rather than hoof it up field for their centre-forwards to chase. Leon Aikman was pivotal to Town's game, and when he picked out Cayne Maxwell on 23, the winger struck the ball well enough, but could only find the side netting.

Two minutes later we were treated to what will probably go down as the "ontheroad" blog save of the season. Pete Stubley collected the ball out wide and laid into the path of Luke Walker.  The no. 11 raced into the box and unleashed a terrific drive from 12 yards that looked a goal all the way. James Beddingham had other thoughts though, and he arched his back and outstretched his arm superbly to tip the effort onto the bar.  Excellent save - well done, Jimmy.  H-T 0-0

Adam Nelson had a great chance to put the Yellows ahead on 61, after he was played in on goal by Aikman. Unfortunately for the striker, Pinxton keeper Gary Briggs had read the danger and was on hand on the edge of the box to slide in and snuff out the danger. 

The games only goal came from an unlikely source. MONTELL GATLAND is not known for his striking prowess, but he had replaced Nelson up top for Hucknall, and when Aikman fed him in the box, the substitute hammered home despite the best efforts of Briggs. 

Referee Kev Guise added on five minutes to the end of the game, and for all of those minutes, Pinxton attacked the Town goal relentlessly, but despite having several clear cut chances, the Yellows defence held on and Hucknall progress to the next round.

We usually enjoy our visits to Clipstone, having made lots of good friends over the past season or two. With a fair smattering of our buddies from North Notts also present, we were never short of company. Great to see Adam Barlow again - not seen him for a while. A lot of his time is now spent watching and promoting the women's game, so we rarely see him at any of our matches. Thanks for the contribution to the charity, Adam. 

Retford Town !! I think not!

After exchanging pleasantries with Brett Marshall, and with Rob and Julie Waite, we took up a position near the halfway line where we met our good friend Richard Lane. Richard told us how his Son Rickie has six and a half pages of sports reports in the Newark Advertiser - not bad to say he's only been on the paper a short while.

Retford are struggling in the NCEL Premier division, whilst Clipstone are one of the favourites to secure promotion from NCEL division one. This was down as a home banker, but after Retford had soaked up all the early Clipstone pressure, they actually took the lead on 14 when a shot from the edge of the box hit KYLE HADLEY on the head and sent the ball flying over the home keeper.

The lead lasted barely 60 seconds though as straight from the restart the home team were on level terms, CALLUM MAWBY firing  home from close range. Did Josh Gibson get a touch? Not sure, but the NCEL website credits the goal to the striker.

As Clipstone increased the pressure, it seemed inevitable that another goal would come and from a 24th minute corner, KARL COLLEY looped a header at the far stick that arched gracefully over Tom Fuller and nestled in the back of the net. H-T 2-1

Retford came out in the second half with a steely resolve and gave the home defence a testing time. Unfortunately the Badgers were unable to penetrate the Cobras back four, and the home team sealed victory with 6 minutes to go, JOSH GIBSON definitely grabbing this one. The icing on the cake for the home supporters was the fourth goal, scored by RYAN DAMMS.  The striker collected well on the right and raced in at goal before lashing an unstoppable drive past Fuller from the corner of the box. F-T 4-1

The final will be at Field Mill sometime in April, where Clipstone will face Basford United, who beat Dunkirk 4-2 in the other semi-final. I only hope the organisation on the night is markedly better than it was the last time the final was held at Mansfield Town FC!

There were several games that we could have gone to this week, but the last time we visited Plains Road we were treated to a goal fest as the Miners drew four apiece with Radcliffe Olympic. I thought there may be a few goals in this game (wrong!) - St. Andrews were in fourth place in the league table prior to kick off, with their hosts lying 13th. 

 

The addition of Roddy Maveso from Radford added some steel to the Gedling back line and the Saints, although playing neat, approach football, rarely troubled the Miners' defence.

Gedling's Dan Gleeson hit a free-kick goalwards in the third minute, but Saints keeper Shane Ancliffe tipped the effort over the bar. 

After a neat Saints passing move, Perry Johnson fired the ball into the box from the right. When Dan Kitchen nodded on, Danny Henfry tried his luck with back to goal but the effort flew over the Gedling bar.

Jack Hopper had a great chance to open the scoring on 15 after he was played in on goal - unfortunately for the winger, Ancliffe spread himself well to block the shot.

Gleeson tried his luck with a free-kick again on the half-hour, but although his fierce drive was well placed, Ancliffe did well to tip over for a corner. 

Gedling keeper Scott Miles had a rush of blood on 40, racing out to face Brady Hickey - the winger calmly passed the ball to Henfry, but his shot was intercepted by Gleeson, much to the keeper's relief.

The best chance of the half came in the final minute, Courtney Bartley firing in a perfect cross from the right that Alex Clarson should have buried. Sadly he guided his header wide of the upright from just a few yards out. H-T 0-0

With three minutes of the second half played, Gedling centre-half Anthony Brown made a superb challenge on Hickey in the box when it seemed the games opening goal was on the cards. 

Both teams were still trying to play their passing games, but as the half went on and the legs got heavier on a very testing pitch, we looked doomed to notching up only our second goal-less game of the season. 

St. Andrews were awarded a free-kick with 10 to play - Shay Brennan fired the ball at goal and it was met with a header that was cleared off the line. 

As Welfare countered, Kelvin Mushambi played Mitch Slawson in one-on-one with Ancliffe, but the final shot was tame and the keeper gathered comfortably. 

The Saints hit the underside of the bar with a header with five minute to play, but as the ball bounced down the Welfare defence managed to hack away the loose ball. Slawson had another great chance to snatch it for the Miners, but fired wide of the far post after Tom McDonald had laid the ball neatly into his path. F-T 0-0
