Heanor Town 2-1 Armthorpe Welfare

Tuesday 10th March 2015 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: The Town Ground, Mayfield Road, Heanor, Derbyshire

Competition: NCEL Premier Division

Referee: Michael Scriven (Leics)

Scorers:
Lions - Jay Cooper (17), Sean Gregory (21)
Welfare - Simon Houlden (68)

Line-ups

Heanor almost threw away the points late in the game, as they failed to capitalise on their first half  domination.  They had a plethora of chances to make the game safe, but had to settle for just a two goal lead at the break, and if not for a couple of great saves from Ian Deakin, the visitors would have gone back to South Yorkshire with an unlikely victory.

All the early play was in the Welfare half, and the only surprise was that it took until the 17th minute for  the Lions to open their account, JAY COOPER heading into the corner of the goal from a neat Greg Marriott cross.

Four minutes later Heanor grabbed a second, this time SEAN GREGORY drilling a low shot from the edge of the area past Dan Montgomery. Selston 2-0 Armthorpe!!! Chance after chance followed as Heanor looked to take the game away from the Welfare - unfortunately for the home faithful none were taken, and they almost lived to regret their profligacy.  H-T 2-0

Invited into the new Town hospitality porta-cabin at the break - thank you Mr. Squires - the chip cob was very nice and very welcome on yet another very chilly evening.

Cooper had a chance to increase Heanor's lead within two minutes of the restart, but smashed the ball against the foot of the post when a more delicate touch may have proved a little more successful.  As it transpired, Heanor stopped playing and allowed Armthorpe to apply pressure.  This pressure culminated in a superb strike at the far stick from SIMON HOULDEN, the substitute hooking the ball into the net after it appeared to be sailing out for a goal-kick.

Now the home team really began to struggle to clear their lines and if not for two wonder saves from Deakin, the home team would have left the Town Ground empty handed. At the final whistle you could almost hear a collective sigh of relief from the home fans - three more points to add to their season's tally, although they barely deserved them. F-T 2-1

After a faily low goal haul since the new year, our three March games have so far delivered 16 goals! With all goals being worth £0.75 to "maggie's", let's hope this goal glut continues for a while....

Shake

3rd team

Great to meet up with Rob Hornby again - not seen Rob for a while. He's been in hospital for a short stay, and only came out on Friday evening - but there was no way this was going to keep the tough bugger away from his football.

I told you - no pics!!

The pitch at the Parish Hall is in superb condition, despite the crappy winter weather it's been subjected to. A big hand for the groundsman - well done!

We'd just settled pitchside when the first goal went in, young TOM WIDDOWSON clipping home from close range after Dominic Airey had crossed the ball in from the right. The goal timed by Mr. Hornby at 76 seconds!

Wayne Cooke had a great chance to double Selston's lead five minutes later, but steered his effort wide of the far post. Damien James had the next chance for the home team, but his goal bound effort was deflected away for a corner.

Boots were not at the races at all, in any way, shape or form, and the only surprise was that it took until the 26th minute for Selston to record their second goal. After the ball was played into the visitors' area, there were a few hacks at it before it fell for WAYNE COOKE to hammer a neat volley past keeper Darren Hurst. In reality, Boots had enough chances to clear the danger beforehand, but failed miserably.

Cooke (hidden) makes it 2-0

James had another effort saved by Hurst's feet on the half hour  as Selston piled on the pressure, but they failed to add to their  tally before the break. H-T 2-0

Boots made two changes at the break, bringing on Jordan Blair and Alex Palmer. These two forward minded players certainly livened things up for the visitors - and within two minutes of the restart Blair brought out a decent save from Jake Simpson after he had broken away down the right.

Three minutes later, Athletic were back in the game - Blairs' powerful drive was parried by Simpson, but the ball fell kindly to MITCHEL JACKSON who, although under pressure, had the relatively simple task of firing home the loose ball.

1-2

With 13 minutes of the second half played, it was all square when Blair pinged a ball through to ALEX PALMER who made no mistake slotting the ball past Simpson.

2-2

Selston responded well, and the introduction of Grant Hackett into the midfield certainly helped steady the boat. The home team re-took the lead on the hour mark, the Chemists' centre-half CHRIS HUTCHINSON diverting the ball into his own net as he tried to block a ball in from the right by James.

3-2

Cooke and Airey combined well on 69, bringing out a smart save from Hurst. Cooke then tried a spectacular overhead kick from an Airey corner, but managed only to hit the ball high, wide and into the school playground next door.

Overhead....

...over the fence

On 78, James beat Mickey Lucas to the ball and crossed the ball straight into the path of WAYNE COOKE who swept it first time past Hurst. Steve Smith replaced Cooke soon after and almost grabbed a fifth for Selston, heading just wide after Hackett had nodded a corner towards the far stick.

Cooke (again out of shot) makes it 4-2

With just four minutes left to play, Ricky Robinson received a straight red from Mr. Bingham - apparently for kicking out at an opponent. F-T 4-2

Mansfield Town U19 1-3 Handsworth Parramore

Thursday 5th March 2015 - kick off 7:40pm

Venue: The Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone,  Notts

Competition: NMDL Cup 1/2 final

Referee: Mr. Richard Eley

Scorers:

Stags - Anthony Dwyer (7)
Ambers - Jed Philips (39),  Matt  Blakemore (57),  Josh Dacre (82 p)

Line-ups
Mansfield - Hampson, Walker, Shires, Brownlie, Danquah, Gibson, Fitzpatrick, Spencer, Blake, Holloway, Dwyer

Handsworth - Jones, Wright, Chapell, Eades, Flaherty, Dawes, Hudson, Phillips, Lee, Carroll, Blakemore. Subs- South, Saffi, Beaumont, Dacre

I've not been to see the Stags' youngsters for a while, so with a free evening, it was off to the Lido. Spent the game in the company of Clipstone Chairman, Brett Marshall, along with AFC Mansfield Chairman, Steve Hymas. Mansfield's first team bosses Andy Murray and Richard Cooper were at the game, ostensibly to sign professional forms with one of the players.

Mansfield were quickly out of the blocks and looked very impressive as they knocked the ball about with some ease. Their early dominance paid dividends in the 5th minute when a Corbin Shires header caused paninc in the visitors' defence, leaving ANTHONY DWYER a simple tap in from close range.

On 39, Parramore won a free-kick 25 yards from the Stags' goal. The ball was floated high in the air and looked like it was going to go out for a goal-kick. The ball actually dropped to a Mansfield defender, but he failed to clear and when the ball was played across the goal, JED PHILIPS was on hand to ram home the equaliser. H-T 1-1

With 12 minutes of the second half played, Handsworth took the lead after Stags'  keeper Frazer Hampson was unable to hold onto Saffi's shot when challenged by MATT BLAKEMORE, and the striker calmly slotted into the empty net. Was it a foul on the keeper as the young Stags claimed? Not really - and hopefully a lesson learned for a very good keeper - keep the ball tight to your body when it's in your hands and there are opposition players in close proximity.

Parramore made their passage the final secure on 82 when the unfortunate Hampson collided with a Handsworth striker, and sent him flying. To me it looked a stonewall penalty and so did the Referee and his Assistant. Strangely, Hampson was given a straight red for the incident. Very questionable when there was no obvious goalscoring  opportunity  prevented, nor was there serious foul play. A yellow would probably have been sufficient punishment, especially when the penalty had already been awarded.

Sam Wilson came on in Hampson's place, and despite dancing around on his line "a la Grobbelaar", JOSH DACRE  waited  until the keeper had settled down a bit before sending the ball one way as Wilson dived the other. F-T 1-3

Great game of football - both teams gave their all and on balance, the better team won and will now face either Hallam or Collingham in the final.

Basford Utd 6-0 Dunkirk FC

Tuesday 3rd March 2015 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: Greenwich Avenue,  Basford,  Notts

Competition: Midland Football League Premier Division

Referee: Mr. Richard Cattell

Scorers: Lee Hendrie (16, 88), Ruben Wiggins-Thomas (45, 45+1, 78), Willis Francis (65)

Line-ups (it transpired that Dunkirk had no subs despite naming four)

It was a really cold night, so minimal notes were taken. The actual report is based mostly on Basford United's twitter feed (thank you Basford!)

We stood with serial hoppers Chris Berezai and Neil Laughlin throughout the game - nice to see them both again.

The last fixture we saw between these teams was a nine goal thriller – Basford edging out Dunkirk 5-4 in added time. This Dunkirk team is a shadow of that one. Bottom of the league before kick off and unable to find any subs, this was never going to be a good night  for the Dunkirk faithful. The fact that a win would take Basford back to top spot in the league could only have added to the Dunkirk worries.

The home team started well and Ryan Whitehurst went close to an opener as he forced Jake Want into a fine parry in the 10th minute. They took the lead on 16 and it was a belter of a goal.  Whitehurst found Lee Hendrie some 20+ yards from goal and the former Aston villa favourite crashed the ball into the top corner giving Jake Want in the Dunkirk net no chance.

By now Basford were shooting in, and Stuart Hendrie brought Jake Want into action in the 28th minute, the keeper keeping out the effort. To be fair, Want made four of five terrific stops as a rampant United looked to add to their tally.

Aiden Smith went down injured, and after treatment the full back could not continue so with no subs, the visitors were down to ten men.

With two to play before the break, Stuart Hendrie was tripped in the box and Ruben Wiggins-Thomas fired home emphatically from the spot.

Wiggins-Thomas netted his second soon after. Several Basford players had decent chances to beat Want, but when the ball landed at the feet of the Basford no. 9 he made no mistake from close range H-T 3-0

Willis Francis came on for Rob Darkin after 65 minutes and bagged with almost his first touch, a simple tap in after Nicky Hawkins tried to head clear but managed only to pick out the Basford sub in front of goal.

Nick Hawkins handled in the box on 78, and Wiggins-Thomas blasted home from the spot to complete his hat trick. Lee Hendrie ended the scoring, grabbing his second by selling a great dummy to Want and rolling the ball in the empty net to make it six with just a couple of minutes left on the clock.
