Back for the New Year

After missing almost all of December through illness, it is going to be good to get back on the road and start the fund raising wagon rolling again.

Not a lot of midweek action during January for the Senior teams, but the U19 & U21 development leagues compensate more than adequately.

Provisional schedule, dependent on improving health, and the vagaries of the UK climate of course:-

1st Rainworth MW v Sheffield FC
3rd Hucknall Tn v Linby CW
7th Heanor T U21 v Buxton U21
10th Basford Utd v Loughboro Uni
13th Clipstone v Ruddington Village
14th AFC Mansfield v Eccleshill Utd
15th MTFC U19 v Collingham U19
17th Pinxton v Hucknall Tn
21st AFC Mansfield U21 v Buxton U21
24th Heanor Tn v Garforth Tn
29th MTFC U19 v Southwell City U19
31st Linby CW v Mickleover Royals

Cuddle time, chaps!!

After taking an enforced break from the game, and being confined to quarters for the better part of two weeks, I needed to get out and about and get my "fix".

The first December game for "ontheroad", and it wasn't exactly the best of contests, to say the least. Unfortunately  there was not a lot to report about on the first half, apart from a superb James Beddingham penalty save on 26. H-T 0-0

Hucknall slowly began to dominate as the second half dragged on, and deservedly went ahead on 65 when Leon Aikman played a neat through ball into ADAM NEWTON'S path - the no. 9 running in on goal before slotting past Liam Mitchell from just inside the box.  F-T 1-0

Clipstone FC 4-0 Winterton Rangers

Saturday 22nd November 2014 - kick off 3:02pm

Venue: Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone Road East, Clipstone, Notts

Competition: NCEL Div 1

Referee: Robert Woodburn

Scorers: Karl Colley (9, 73), Jamie Brown (27, 75)

Line-ups -

Clipstone: Siddons, Paling, Mawby, Whitehead, Colley, Shaw, Wood, Carty, Gibson, Brown, Ord

Rangers: TBC

My last blog entry for a couple of weeks - and with the amount of errors I'm making at the moment, it's probably a good thing!

I will be scheduling games for December and contributing to the charity based on the actual scores of those games, even though I won't be attending.

Clipstone's Press Officer Nigel Spalding will be preparing a full, comprehensive report for the Cobras' website, so I won't go into too much detail here.

Clipstone were without the services of top scorer Jamie Smith, but gave a debut to recent signing Jamie Brown. Another recent signing, Karl Colley, played in the heart of the home defence, and even though Winterton threatened on occasion, the big man took it all in his stride, and with his two goals was arguably the Clipstone MOM.

KARL COLLEY scored the opening goal in the 9th minute, when Steve Carty's corner from the right was met in front of goal with a firm header by the defender.

1-0 Karl Colley

With Winterton playing a very high line, they were always prone to a ball played over the top. With 27 played JAMIE BROWN made them pay when he latched onto such a ball and raced in on goal, coolly steering the ball past visiting keeper Danny Waring. H-T 2-0

Carty had a great chance to add to Clipstone's lead on 70 when he collected a superb ball from Dan Wood - unfortunately for the Clipstone skipper the goalkeeper pulled off a great save and the chance was lost.

Clipstone were awarded a corner on 73 and it almost brought a repeat of the fist goal, but on this occasion the keeper managed to tip Colley's header over the bar. Lesson learned? No, because when Carty swung in the resultant corner, COLLEY headed home the Cobras' third.

Clipstone grabbed a fourth three minutes later - Carty's superb run down the left culminating with a ball across the goal to where JAMIE BROWN was waiting at the far post to side-foot home. F-T 4-0

Arnold Town 4-1 Kimberley MW

Saturday 15th November 2014 - kick off 3:00pm

Venue: Eagle Valley, Oxton Road, Arnold, Nottinghamshire

Competition: East Midlands Counties League

Referee: Sam Kane

Scorers:

Eagles- Courtney Hastings (31, 35, 59), Danny Hayes (71)

Miners - Jermaine Gordon (4)

Line-ups:

Arnold - Ross Cherry, Craig Meakin, Stephen Cox, Danny Haynes, Simon Hore, James Price, Luke Smith, Jimmy Spiers, Courtney Hastings, Warren Hatfield, Danny Chadwick.

Kimberley - Matt Walsh, Scott Carlile, Ethan Winfield, Ian Shepherd, Jacob Webster, Roberto Labbatte, Charlie Ward, Jordan Whitehead, Jermaine Gordon, Liam Honeyman, Richard Dean.

Seems strange that these teams have never previously met, but this first meeting was well worth the wait!  Both teams a credit to step 6 football and to the EMCL.

Kimberley were missing a few of their regular starters, Martin Lench and Anthony Gregory amongst those absent. Arnold have a star-studded (at this level) line-up and should on paper, be more than competitive in the EMCL. That they are only mid-table is something of a surprise.

It was slightly murky down the Valley when we arrived, and although the visibility worsened as the game went on, it never looked to be in any danger of being abandoned.

Kimberley opened the scoring in just the 4th minute, a free-kick headed down at the far post to where JERMAINE GORDON was on hand to rifle home from close range.

nod down...
.... Gordon celebrates

Arnold had a really good shout for a penalty two minutes later when Courtney Hastings was dragged down in the Kimberley box, but the Referee waved play on despite the strikers' protests. Soon after, the Eagles had another good shout for a penalty when Danny Hayes almost had his shirt stripped from his back as he went to attack a Luke Smith free-kick. His vociferous protests brought him a meeting with Mr. Kane and his skipper Simon Hore. No caution though!

Warren Hatfield hit a powerful drive from 20 yards on 18, but Matt Walsh in the visitors' goal collected with some ease. Hayes always creates problems when he goes forward for set-pieces, and when Smith fired in another free-kick from the right on 31, the centre-back nodded down and COURTNEY HASTINGS drove the ball across Walsh to bring the scores level.

Hastings fires home

The home team took the lead four minutes later, this time Smith's well placed right wing corner giving HASTINGS the simplest of headers at the far stick.

Hasting heads Arnold ahead

Right on the stroke of half time, Kimberley lost the services of Liam Honeyman after he came out worst in a challenge with Smith. H-T 2-1

HASTINGS completed his personal triple on 59, a snap shot from the edge of the box flying past the diving Walsh and entering the goal in off the post. Hastings saw his piledriver well saved by Walsh on 66, but the keeper was unable to prevent another home goal a few minutes later.  Another free-kick from Smith, this one from just inside the halfway line, met with a powerful, stooping header on the run by DANNY HAYNES.

Danny Haynes - quality

Haynes saw another header well saved by Walsh on 82, and the visiting keeper also made a terrific save from Hatfield as the game entered second half stoppage time. F-T 4-1

Nice to see Warren in action again

Heanor Town go through to the next round 3-1 on  penalties.

Tuesday 11th November 2014 - kick off 8:16pm

Venue: The Town Ground, Mayfield Avenue, Heanor, Derbyshire

Competition:  Derbyshire F.A. Senior Cup Round 2

Referee: Nick Hopton

Scorers:
Lions - Sam Jones ( 54 pen),  Kieran Debrouwer (75)
Vics - Lee Stevenson (24, 74)

Line-ups

What a night! As we drove towards the ground, we were struck by how dark it was - no street lights, no lights in the houses on Mundy Street, and no floodlights! Parked up and walked to the ground which was in total darkness! Not a great start to the evening! Then it rained - and rained - and rained! Great!

The power was restored fairly quickly, but with the players having to warm up, the kick off was delayed until 8:15pm. The players were lead onto the pitch by current and ex-servicemen to great applause. The Last Post sounded, and a minutes silence in honour of the fallen was observed.

48 pages - excellent publication - well done Mr. Squires!

The football wasn't great, but our good friend Chris Dent made the evening for us when he handed me an envelope that contained a letter from his good lady and a sizeable contribution to the "maggie's"  fund.  Lumps in throats all round. SHARON DENT  on behalf of "maggie's" I'd like to say a big THANK YOU!

Not so small, Sharon - very many thanks

The first half of the game was instantly forgettable - apart from the 22 yard bullet from LEE STEVENSON that almost took out the back of the Town net, that is!   Great strike from the former Lion. H-T 0-1

The second half was a slight improvement on the first - SAM JONES levelled things from the spot after Marc Strzyzewski had flown through the air when challenged for the ball with Vics' keeper Gary Young. The keeper never made contact - but the dive over the keeper by the centreback was impressive - and it certainly impressed Referee Hopton. Didn't send the keeper off for the "foul" though - Strzyzewski was through on goal, with no covering defenders, so the red card was surely warranted.

Borrowash were awarded a free-kick some 25 yards from goal in the 74th minute. STEVENSON hit the ball well enough, and Ian Deakin seemed to have it covered - but it bounced out of the keeper's grasp and flew over his shoulder and into the back of the net.

Seconds later another free-kick was awarded, this time to the home team, and KIERAN DEBROUWER curled the ball in at the near post, giving Young no chance.  No more goals, so into extra-time we went. Plenty of chances were created, but none were converted - and not many of the ensuing  penalties  were either! Heanor eventually triumphing 3-1 thanks in no small part to a couple of great saves from Deakin.

We arrived back in Hucknall at 11:15pm - I reckon it may be a good idea to give Cup games a wide berth in the future!

Line-ups

We just can't win sometimes! The Welfare faithful usually blame us when the have a poor game/poor result - on this occasion the Shiners' boss Brian Franks laid the blame clearly at our door!

The Shiners have failed to perform when we've been to watch them, but they did win both games. On this occasion they were found wanting again - and 16 goal striker Shane Newton hardly had a sniff, thanks to some solid defending from the home team.

Games were being called off on a regular basis throughout the morning, and the choice of game was becoming more and more limited. Although we were at Plains Road last weekend, the ground is only a 20 minute drive away, and after contacting Tony Hay and Kelvin Mushambi for confirmation that the game was to go ahead, we decided this was our best option.

Remembering

The pitch looked fine as we entered the ground, albeit a little soggy in one corner. No standing water on the playing surface meant this game was never in doubt, and it turned out to be a great game with a goal that will probably go down as the goal of the season.

The Miners welcomed back Ricky Law after a one match ban, and he had the games first real shot in anger on 20 - Steve Smith in the Shiners goal collecting easily enough.

Tom Leighton had the visitors best effort in the 33rd minute, curling a shot against the Gedling bar after Ant Fay had picked him out in the area.

Gedling's opening goal came from a long punt upfield that saw  Tony Law and Andy Mottershead in a race to the ball. Only one winner really and the striker controlled well before cutting in and curling a wonderful effort past Smith. Unfortunately Kev's camera froze as he was following the action, so no pics, sorry! H-T 1-0

The Shiners had a great chance to level with just three minutes of the second half played - Sam Keenan firing in a ball from the left that was headed on by Newton to Cory Bowler, but the midfielder could only direct his shot wide of the goal.

Tony Law's shot on 56 was collected well by Smith, then the no.9 was denied by a goal line clearance soon after. Sam Hawkins and Jack Hopper were introduced on 68, and it was the latter who added to the Miners' lead seconds later.

As Normanton pressed for the equaliser, the ball was cleared from the back and HOPPER ran at goal, skipped past Smith and rolled the ball into the empty net. Hawkins tried his luck for 20 yards in the 75th minute, but his rocket effort flew just over the bar.

The away team should have been awarded a penalty a minute later. Newton was through on goal but Steve Brett made a sliding challenge that saw the ball hit his arm and move it away from danger. The Referee waved play on much to the annoyance of Cory Bowler, who went way to far with his remonstrations and was shown a straight red.

The Gedling third goal has to be one of the best ever seen at Plains Road, it will certainly be amongst the front runners for the "ontheroad" goal of the season award!  MARLON WAITES had run his socks off throughout proceedings, but his overhead, acrobatic volley from the corner of the box that flew past Smith into the far corner, alleviated any thoughts of weariness and fatigue! What a strike! I will be on the lookout for the match reports from both teams, as I am sure their authors will describe this goal far better than yours truly! F-T 3-0

Heanor Town 3-0 AFC Wulfrunians

Tuesday 4th November 2014 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: The Town Ground,  Mayfield Avenue, Heanor,  Derbyshire

Competition: F.A. Vase 1st Round Replay

Referee: Hristo Karaivanov

Scorers: Gary Ricketts (26), Marc Strzyzewski (33),  Keiran Debrouwer (47)

Line-ups:
Lions - Deakin, Marriott, Shaw, Jones,  Hawes,  Strzyzewski,  Grantham, Moran, Ricketts, Piliero, Debrouwer

AFC - Brown, Perks, Jones, Sedgemore, Hill, Talbot, Howells, Rose-Laing, Greg, Stevenson, King

We've been to watch Heanor a few times this season, but this has to go down as the Lions' best all round performance we have seen at the Town Ground so far.

Both teams were a credit to their respective leagues and although the result looks comfortable, AFC never lost hope and threw everything at the home defence in the second half in an attempt to get something out of the game.

We received our usual friendly greeting from the Heanor officials, and also received a donation to the maggie's fund. Many thanks!!

The opening goal came after 26 minutes of play, Courey Grantham and Greg Marriott combining well down the right, and Marriott's superb ball across the face of the goal was buried by GARY RICKETTS.

MARC STRZYZEWSKI added the second on 33, belting home the loose ball after the home defence failed to deal with a Paulo Piliero corner from the left. H-T 2-0

The second period was only 90 seconds old when the home team increased their lead. Ricketts fired in a cross from the right to the far post that KEIRAN DEBROUWER managed to stab towards the goal. It looked like Jonathan Brown's save had kept the effort from entering the net, but he had imparted considerable spin on the ball whilst making the save, and the ball rolled past him and into the net.

AFC now began to control the game as they looked to salvage something, but with Ian Deakin in fine form and the back four looking solid, the visitors' toils were in vain.  F-T 3-0

Nottm Forest Ladies 0-1 Coventry City Ladies

Sunday 2nd November 2014 - kick-off 2:02pm

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Nottingham

Competition: F.A. Women's Premier League, Northern Division

Scorer: Helen Dermody (17)

Line-ups:
Reds - Kinnerley, L Howard, Greenan, Griffin, Kennaugh, Hutsby, McKechnie, Weston, Bell, M Howard, Meade. Subs- Moore, Kay, Sullivan, Foster, Clark

Sky Blues - Wood, Neville, Johnson, Formaston, Miles, Toussaint, Hughes, Barber, Lowder, Gauntlett, Dermody. Subs- Wilcox, Towers, Piggott

Kev decided to take time out to watch this game with me - I wonder if he will be with me when the Reds play Wolves and sporting Club Albion later in the month? Not the best game we have seen this season, but with Coventry sitting atop the league, the Reds Ladies must have known this would be a tough one. League table.

When the visitors had the ball, they looked calm in possession and always seemed to have time to ping the ball about. Jade Formaston in the middle of the park distributed the ball well, but apart from the early goal, Vanessa Kinnerley in the home goal didn't have too many saves to make. The goal came in the 17th minute, and it was winger to winger as former Red Amber Hughes crossed from the right and HELEN DERMODY raced in at the far post to head home.

First half action

Chances were few and far between for both teams, but late in the game, Forest changed tactics and began hitting the ball over the top of the Coventry back-line. This almost paid dividends as Andrea Bell missed one glorious chance by not hitting the ball earlier when clean through on goal, then when the ball was played in seconds later, the same player was impeded as she raced in on goal - penalty and red card? No it wasn't - the Referee waved play on, leaving the Forest players a little non-plussed. Maybe if Bell had gone to ground........F-T 0-1
