Basford Utd 5-3 Clipstone FC

Thursday 30th April 2015 - kick off 7:30pm

Venue:  Field Mill,  Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

Competition: Notts F.A. Senior Cup Final

Referee: Sean Richardson (the third team handled the game superbly!)

Scorers :
Basford - Stuart Hendrie (35, 52, 58),  Deon Meikle (51),  Ruben Wiggins-Thomas (90)
Clipstone - Callum Mawby (65, 75), Josh Gibson (87)

Staring elevens:
Basford: Deeney, F Smith, Fletcher, Thornton, Darkin, Meikle, L Hendrie, Doolan, Wiggins-Thomas, Whitehurst, S Hendrie.

Clipstone: Siddons, Paling, Shaw, Rawson, Mintoft, Hill, Brown,  Austin, J Smith, Mawby, Ord.

It was good to see so many friends at Field Mill, and great to be  back at my  spiritual home again. This was much better organised than the last time it was held at Manafield Town - well done to all involved - and a big thank you to Notts F.A. Chairman Malcolm Fox for the continued support of "maggie's".

Notts F.A. Chairman, Mr. Malcolm Fox

This was the Nottinghamshire Football Association's Blue Ribbon showcase game, played between teams who had already secured their respective league titles. We expected a Basford win, and after an hour or so it looked like they would stroll it - a four goal lead with Clipstone shell-shocked! But this Clipstone side are not league champions for nothing. They rallied and gave us a cracking last half hour coming back to 4-3 with three to play.

After 35 minutes, with both teams struggling to settle down and leaving us wondering where the first goal was going to come from, STUART HENDRIE received the ball 22 yards from goal and curled a spectacular effort past the despairing, grasping dive of Nick Siddons in the Clipstone goal. H-T 1-0

DEON MEIKLE headed Basford further in front six minutes after the restart, the defender left completely unmarked in front of goal after a free-kick was fired in from the right. Seconds later, Basford added their third thanks to a STUART HENDRIE low drive, then the no. 11 completed his personal treble on 58, firing a drive in at the far post.

With just over an hour played, a pass back to Basford stopper Saul Deeney was a little under paced, and allowed CALLUM MAWBY to nip in and fire home, beginning the Clipstone come back.  MAWBY added his and Clipstone's second on 75, then on 87, JOSH GIBSON fired home through a ruck of players to put the spectre of extra-time hanging over us.

As Clipstone pressed though, they were caught out at the back in the final minute, and when the ball was played out to RUBEN WIGGINS-THOMAS, the striker raced into the box before neatly curling the ball around Siddons. F-T 5-3

The impressive trophy was presented to Basford skipper Josh Thornton by Mansfield Town striker Liam Hearn, followed by the  the  inevitable champagne shower.

Basford lift the Cup

Tuesday 28 April 2015

Kimberley MW AFC 3-0 Ashland Rovers Devp

Tuesday 28th April 2015 - kick off 7:30pm

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Nottingham.

Competition: Notts F.A. Saturday Junior Cup

Referee: Mr. Ben Scott

Scorers: Shaw Hutchinson (44), John Whitehurst (57), Danny Walsh (87)

Teams:

Kimberley - Matt Walsh, Liam Hutchinson, Chris Coleman, Joe Staley, Liam Smith, Shaw Hutchinson, John Whitehurst, Robbie Tonra, Danny Walsh, Anthony Withe, Ben Greenhalgh. Subs: Buster Saunders, Jake Brookes, Ben Foster, Mark Jordan, Lewis Shaw

Ashland Rovers Res - Adam Revuelta, Jack Coupe, Richard Philpott, Adam Mellors, Joe Butler, Jonathan Preece, Ian Allsop, George Evans, Paul Revuelta, Julian Topliss, David Coleman. Subs: Nick Jackson, Sam Phillips, Lee Smith, Tom Phillips.

Please ignore the date on the programme - this game was scheduled for last Tuesday, but floodlight problems saw this cup final delayed by a week. We weren't too sure of the standard of football we should expect, but it soon became clear that this was a contest between two teams who play in the Notts Senior League bottom tier for a reason! Three fine goals, but all in all, not a game to etch itself into the memory.

Shake

The games first chance of note came in the 24th minute - Danny Walsh heading just wide of the post when it looked easier to score. Seconds later Shaw Hutchinson also headed wide as Kimberley at last began to make inroads into the Rovers' defence.

Close, but no cigar!

We had to wait until the 44th minute for the games first goal though, a cracking free kick from SHAW HUTCHINSON that flew past the defensive wall and into the back of the net, despite keeper Adam Revuelta getting a hand to it. H-T 1-0

Great to see Julian Topliss back in action

Chris Coleman was the creator of the second goal in the 57th minute - his superb pass from the left curled into the path of JOHN WHITEHURST, who beat the keeper in a race to the ball, then clipped it around him before rolling it into an empty net. That was the end of the action until the 87th minute when DANNY WALSH was played in on goal and after racing into the box calmly stotted the ball across the keeper to bag at the far stick. F-T 3-0

Mansfield Town Ladies 1-4 Leafield Athletic Ladies

Sunday 26th April 2015 - kick off 2:00pm

Venue: Field Mill, Quarry Lane, Mansfield, Nottinghamshire

Competition: F.A. Women's Premier League, Midlands Division 1

Referee: Andy Harland

Scorers:
Stags - Jemma Douglas (pen 73)
Leafield - Gabbi Reid (22), Sam White (25), Leigh Dugmore (53), Sade Alaka (86)

Squads:

I hadn't planned on taking in this game, but it was sunny and calm, so headed off to Field Mill to see if the Stags' Ladies could take something from this game in their attempt to stave off the spectre of relegation.

Dave Bramwell was in the stadium with his son when I arrived, so at least I wasn't going to be "billy-no-mates"! We sat in the dim and shadow covered West Stand originally, but after about 25 minutes it was so cold we decided it was probably better to head over to the unshaded corner of the North Stand and watch the game from there.

Jemma Douglas had the home team's first real chance in the second minute, but Natasha Weldon in the Leafield's goal saved easily enough. Rachael Smith saw her header in the 6th minute blocked on the Stags goal line, but chances were few and far between early doors.

We had to wait until the 22nd minute for the opening goal, GABBI REID making no mistake, rolling the ball past Emily Gascoigne, after she was gifted the ball 25 yards from goal. Three minutes later the lead was doubled when SAM WHITE hit a low drive from the edge of the box that crept just inside the post.

Reid went close to adding the visitors third on 44, but her shot across the goal rolled agonisingly wide of the far post. H-T 0-2.

The second half was only 5 minutes old when Leafields had yet another chance to increase their lead - Leigh Dugmore crossing for Alice Bowles, who saw her curling effort hit the outside of the post.

Bowles was the creator of the visitors third goal on 53, her cross picking out LEIGH DUGMORE unmarked in front of goal, and the no.7 made no mistake.

Lucy Webster had a great chance to reduce the Stags' arrears on 70, but hit her shot from just in front of goal halfway up the Quarry Lane End stand. Three minutes later the arrears were reduced when JEMMA DOUGLAS fired home from the spot after Webster had been upended in the box.

Athletic's skipper, Jess Lippiatt, headed wide from a corner in the 78th minute, but the Stags should have added  their second on 83, but Gemma Hodgkinson headed the ball into the ground from close range, and watched in agony as it bounced high and over the bar.

The scoring was completed in the 86th minute - SADE ALAKA racing in on the Stags' goal and although Gascoyne got a hand to the first shot, the ball fell kindly to Alaka who rolled home at the second attempt. F-T 1-4

Belper Utd 0-2 Hucknall Town

Saturday 25th April 2015 - kick off 3:00pm

Venue: Coronation Park, Chewton Street, Eastwood, Nottinghamshire

Competition: CML Cup semi-final

Referee: Darren Tingle

Scorers: Adam Nelson (56), Aaron Evans (75)

Line ups:
Belper - Whittingham, Moss, Conway, Robley, Slater, Conkleton, Harvey, Dhindsa, Murray, Mundin, Curtis. Subs: Vickers, Sparkes, Freeman, Marshall, Rathbone.

Hucknall - Beddingham, Henry, Pitt, Davidson, Atkinson, Leak, Evans, Maxwell, Nelson, Hamilton, Waplington, subs: Rigg, Robinson, Gatland, Aikman.

Shake!

We have seen our local team a few times this season, and thought that it would be a good idea to support them in this CML cup semi final at our old stomping ground, Coronation Park. We used to visit quite often in the "ontheroad" formative years and one bonus today was meeting up with one of our favourite players from those years, namely one Kelvin Mushambi, now skipper and Assistant Manager at Gedling Miners Welfare.

Mushy!!!!!

Hucknall had a couple of early chances, David Leak headed wide from a free-kick as did Johnny Hamilton from a corner, but the football on show was, in all honesty, not very good. Town were the busier team, and Hamilton and Adam Nelson had half chances as the first half dragged on.

James Beddingham

Belper rarely troubled Town keeper James Beddingham - and he must have been pleased about that, having rushed to the ground after just jetting back from Australia. Just before the break, Aaron Evans mis-kicked the ball when through on goal, and that just about summed up the first period. H-T 0-0

Scott Whittingham

Hucknall continued the second period on the front foot and after a goalmouth scramble on 51, the ball fell kindly to Nelson who cleared the bar and the stand from 6 yards out.

Over she goes!!!
Just in case you missed the ball!!!

The stalemate was broken five minutes later when a ball into the box was clipped over the despairing dive of Belper keeper Scott Whittingham by ADAM NELSON.

Nelson clips home the 1st Town goal

Belper by now were struggling to keep in the game and never looked like breaking through a resilient Hucknall back line. The introduction of prolific striker Sam Vickers didn't add anything to the United game, and they should have gone further behind after 68, but Nelson failed to direct his header from a Ben Waplington corner on target. Nelson forced another Town corner on 74, this time Waplington's ball in was met in the six yard box with a thunderous header from AARON EVANS that gave Whittingham no chance.

Evans heads home the Town 2nd

Scott Slater had a chance to halve the United deficit in the 79th minute after town had failed to clear their lines, but the centre-back fired just wide. Hucknall kept their composure for the remaining few minutes and on balance of play, were deserving winners. They will now play Clifton in the final after the All Whites defeated League Champions Mickleover Royals 3-0 at Pinxton FC. F-T 0-2

Linby CW 2-3 Bilsthorpe FC

Thursday 24th April 2015 - kick-off 7:30pm

Venue: Mansfield Hosiery Mills Ground, The Fieldings, Sutton-In-Ashfield, Notts

Competition: Notts F.A. Saturday Intermediate Cup Final

Referee: Ed Cook

The 3rd team

Scorers:
Linby - Kaylum Mitchell (30), Ruben Mitchell (67 pen)
Bilsthorpe - Liam Black (45, 51), Gavin King (82)

Line-ups -
Linby: Rocco, Frizelle, Coupe, Henshaw, Loydall, Charles, Mitchell R, Ryan, Mitchell K, Butler, McDermott

Bilsthorpe: Sheppard, Clarke, Starbuck, Shaw, Day, Burrell, Leeds, Tolley, Carter, Black, King.

Central Midland League North v South - both teams a credit to their league and their respective divisions. We've not been to the Fieldings since the demise of Sutton Town a few years back, and it was good to see the place is still alive and kicking - and not a bad venue for the Intermediate Cup final.

The great and the good of local non-league football were in attendance, far too many to mention by name, but chatting to Julian Topliss prior to kick off made my evening even before a ball was kicked. Smashing lad, great player - and pleased to know that he is back playing again.

We joined Richard Lane, Pete Chappell and Maurice MacFarland at pitchside, and were soon joined by our good friend Brett Marshall, and with that lot for company you can't fail to enjoy your evening out!

Dan Westwell - we will get you back!!

Gavin King had a shot well save by Luca Rocco in the 12th minute as Bilsthorpe applied the early pressure. Ruben Mitchell hit the ball over the bar for Linby soon after, then Keenan Leeds fired just wide for Bilsthorpe as both teams went all out attack.

On 28, Mark Carter headed just wide, but Linby took the lead with their next attack. A poor throw from Starbuck was intercepted by KAYLUM MITCHELL and the striker fired home at the second attempt after Sheppard had saved the initial shot.

Joe Butler played Mitchell in again on 41, but his shot flew wide of the post when it looked a simple task to put his team two ahead. Costly, because Bilsthorpe were level in stoppage time - a cross from the left headed home by LIAM BLACK, who rose like a salmon to float the ball over Rocco and into the far corner. H-T 1-1

Luca Rocco says hellooo!!

Within 6 minutes of the restart, Bilsthorpe took the lead, this time LIAM BLACK hitting a screamer in off the bar with Rocco well beaten. Rocco had to be alert to tip over another Black header on 63, and the save was made even more important when Linby were awarded a penalty four minutes later, and RUBEN MITCHELL fired home from the spot to bring the scores level.

Bilsthorpe by now were running the game and Linby once again had to thank Rocco on 72, the keeper pushing away a Gavin King shot at his near post. It was KING who actually scored the winning goal with eight minutes to go, but I don't think he knew too much about it! Black hammered a free-kick from 20 yards against the foot of the upright, and the ricochet bounced off King and into the net. Sad way to lose a final for Linby, but Bilsthorpe weren't bothered - cue the celebrations and the bubbly!!! F-T 2-3

Team sheet

After the first 40 minutes I was wondering if this was going to be the third goal-less game of the season - but after 45 minutes the charity had benefited to the tune of £2.25 as Aylestone scored three goals in two mad minutes.

Spent the game in the company of Brian Franks - thanks for the cuppa at half-time, Brian -  my round next time. Also spent the game in the company of a splendid character from Carlton, along with his plastic imitation vuvuzela. You had to enjoy his antics though - obviously he is suffering some sort of mental illness, so I will not dwell on him too much, but fair play to him for travelling all the way from Carlton to Eagle Valley.

I suppose the noise and the chanting are bit much, but all in all he seemed to be enjoying himself, and no harm done,eh? Not too cold at the Valley - and you don't hear that very often - the football from the start left a lot to be desired though.

Ross Cherry had to be alert to in the 6th minute, diving well to save a Lee Ndlovu 18 yard curling free-kick, but with both teams failing to produce much in the way of decent football, we had to wait until the 39th minute before the next real chance was created. This time Cherry, under pressure from Lamar Parkes, lost the ball to a tame tackle and had to be on his toes to dive and collect the loose ball with the no. 10 looming large over him.

Cherry was not so lucky when an Arnold attack broke down on 41.  The ball was played out from the Aylestone back-line to COURTNEY MEADE, and he raced into the Arnold area before slotting under Cherry, despite being under severe pressure from Warren Hatfield. It got worse for the home team some 60 seconds later - MARK PRESTON allowed space and time to lift the ball over Cherry from the edge of the box.

So from a dull game, we had seen two goals in as many minutes - and wouldn't you know it, sixty seconds later along came a third! Ryan Calver fired in a low corner from the right, and LINFORD HARRIS steered his diving header in at the near post. Two minutes of carnage, but on their performance, a lead that Aylestone thoroughly deserved. H-T 0-3

I imagine the Arnold players had their manager's bollocking still ringing in their ears as they walked out onto the pitch for the second half. Whatever Crink said, it worked. They looked a different team and were deservedly back in the game on 52 when SIMON HORE headed home a James Price free-kick. As the home team played a more attacking game though, they left themselves light at the back at times, and only some poor finishing kept them in the game.

It took until the 84th minute for the home team to bag again, this time the ball fired across keeper Jon Tature and going in a the far stick. I thought it was Reggie Royes who wheeled away in delight, but the league website has it down as a JIMMY SPIERS goal.

With a couple of minute left of the 90, Town netted again to draw level in a game we all thought was over at half-time. The visiting defence failed to clear their six-yard area and as the ball ran loose, COURTNEY HASTINGS directed it past the  despairing dive of the keeper. Corey Nightingale had a great chance to sneak all three points as the game entered stoppage time, but headed over from just outside the six yard box. F-T 3-3
