Mansfield Town Ladies 1-3 Radcliffe Olympic Ladies

Tuesday 31st March 2015 - kick off 7:45

Venue: Greenwich Avenue, Basford, Nottm

Competition: Notts F.A. Women's County Cup Final

Referee: Charlotte Bembridge

Line-ups - not known

A comment from my Sister-In-Law on facebook said it all - "you're mad in this weather" - and on this occasion she was probably right. What a miserable night, and although the brave ladies battled well, the game wasn't all that good and on balance the better team were handed the Womens County Cup after the final whistle.

5 minutes in it pissed it down... seriously!!!

Radcliffe won 3-1 - but I'm not writing a report...

Congratulations Radcliffe Ladies - the second goal was special by the way.......

Linby CW 1-4 Hucknall Rolls Royce

Saturday 28th March 2015 - kick off 2:58pm

Venue: Church Lane, Linby, Notts

Competition: Central Midlands League South Division

Referee: Mr. Sam Kane (Carlton)

Scorers:
Linby - Ash Winfield (63)
Rolls - Jack Smith (22), Greg Conn (24, 50), Chay Betteridge (pen 70)

Starting elevens -

Linby - Luca Rocco, Mason Frizelle, Terry Henshaw, Matt Peberday, Callum Loydall, Ash Winfield, Ruban Mitchell, Aaron Ryan, Kaylum Mitchell, Joe Butler, Damian Mann.

Rolls Royce - Jack Walker, Greg Conn, Kane Matthews, Billy Brooks, Ash Marshall, James Duncan, Rory Smith, Jonathan Buckley, Jack Smith, Jack Allen, Chay Betteridge.

After the mornings heavy downpour, we expected the Church Lane ground to be slightly soggy, but were pleasantly surprised to find the grass firm underfoot and the pitch looking in superb condition.

We are season ticket holders at Linby, but this was the first chance we've had to see them for a while. This local derby was a great advert for the non-league game, and both sets of players should be pleased with their efforts.

It was another great day for "maggie's" as well. As well as the £3.75 for the goals scored, Rolls player Richard Harrison made a donation, as did Ash Ward from Linby CW. Thank you both very much - really appreciated.

It's getting towards the end of the season, but that £600 target looks really  achievable. So far, 95 games in, we have both put in £97.75, and my employer A.N. Wallis has done the same. With lots of games in April, I wouldn't be surprised in we don't end up with more than £600 - we'll see!!

Linby started this game strongly, and had a great chance to go ahead on 18, but when Joe Butler cross from the left Ruban Mitchell connected well but hit his shot way over the bar. Kaylum Michell smashed the ball against the Rolls' bar shortly afterwards, another Butler cross catching out the Rolls defence.

The home team would rue their profligacy five minutes later when they went behind to a 25 yard volley from JACK SMITH. The striker hit the ball as sweet as a nut when it sat up nicely for him - Luca Rocco in the home goal had no chance of saving.

Smith's volley too quick for Kev!

Two minutes later, the Linby deficit was doubled. The goal came after Jack Smith had battled to win the ball, and when it fell to GREG CONN, he hit a terrific drive from 25 yards out that sailed over Rocco. Once again the keeper had no chance.

Conn adds the Rolls' second

It should have been three after 28 minutes, but Jack Allen fired over after beating two defenders to the ball. H-T 0-2

The second half was only five minutes old when Rolls added to their tally. The Linby defence failed to clear a neat Billy Brooks free-kick to the edge of the box and when the ball was played across goal, GREG CONN was on hand to stab it home.

With just over an hour played, Butler saw his shot from 18 yards pushed away by Walker as Linby looked to get back into the game. The home team were rewarded for their efforts soon after, when ASHLEY WINFIELD headed home Damian Mann's left wing corner at the far post.

Winfield 1-3

The home team were not in the ascendancy for long though, as Rocco had little choice other that to drag Jack Allen to the ground when the striker had raced into the box after controlling a long punt up field by Walker. CHAY BETTERIDGE stepped up to fire Rolls back into a three goal lead.

Great dive - all to no avail!

Linby never gave up hope though, and Butler brought out a decent save from Walker on 72, then six minutes later Kyle McDermott also fired in a shot that tested the Rolls' custodian. Jack Smith almost grabbed a fifth for Rolls with three to play, but Rocco was out quickly to dive at the striker's feet and end the danger. F-T 1-4

South Normanton Athletic 5-1 Barrow Town

Wednesday 25th March 2015 - kick off 7:53pm

Venue: Lees Lane, South Normanton, Derbyshire

Competition: East Midlands Counties League

Referee: Mr. Rob Rees

Scorers:
Shiners - Dan Riley (9,35,44), Ashley Whitt (45+3), Sam Sims (80)
Town - Chris Davies (52)

Line-ups:

South Normanton: Smith, Leigh, Sims, Roberts, Johnson, Kirk, Whitt, Riley, Crosby, Pawley, Fay. Subs: Jelleyman, Keenan, Betteridge, Leighton, Green.

Barrow Town: King, Sharman, Plummer, Portwood, Rudkin, Davies, Hanlon, Coleman, Allen, Law, Asante. Subs: Martin, Alexander, Lawrence, Hardy.

There were not many games to choose from, but this turned out to be a good choice as far as the charity goes. Another £4.50 added to the total which now stands at almost £550.00.

We had a walk around the ground before deciding to stand opposite the dugouts and annoy Assistant Referee Derek Spray! He was on the end of some abuse from a few of the Shiners' faithful, but overall, his decision making was almost flawless.

South Normanton went ahead with only 9 minutes gone, DAN RILEY clipping home at the far post after he picked out by Jamie Pawley's neat cross. Luke Crosby saw his goal bound shot saved by Ashley King on 16, then soon after the keeper had to be alert to keep out Pawley's fierce drive.

Anthony Fay made a great run into the box with 33 minutes played,  and his shot brought out a decent save from King. The keeper was at fault for the second Normo goal though, failing to hold on to a corner under pressure from Ash Whitt, RILEY on hand to stab home the loose ball.

RILEY completed what is generally labelled the perfect hat-trick on 44, his header from Pawley's inch perfect cross completing the left foot, right foot, header triple. ASH WHITT grabbed another in the third minute of added time, bundling the ball home at the far post from another superb Pawley corner.
H-T 4-0

We heard the Barrow gaffer giving it some "hairdryer" as we headed to the club house for a warm - it was a very, bitter cold evening in South Derbyshire.

The "hairdryer" technique seemed to do it's job though, as Barrow came out and began to take the game to their hosts. Late in the first half they lost the services of Ebony Asante due to injury and his replacement, Callem Lawrence, went into the middle of a front three. I imagine  "what have we got to lose" was a part of the half-time team talk.

It worked for a while, and within 7 minutes of the restart, Barrow had reduced their deficit, CHRIS DAVIES on the end of a free-kick that was launched into the box, the midfielder slamming home from 15 yards.

The home team re-adjusted their line-up to try and cope with the Barrow threat by putting Sam Sims in his more usual midfield role, and his efforts certainly slowed the visitors' march forward. Normo defended well, with Sims' replacement, Sam Keenan, performing well on the left side of a solid looking back four.

The game was high paced throughout, but I have to admit that the notebook stayed in the pocket during the second period - it was far too cold to take copious notes.

Kev had predicted the second half would be 1-1, and was suitably pleased when, with 10 minutes to play, SAM SIMS pounced on a loose ball in front of goal and made no mistake finding the back of the net. F-T 5-1

As we approached junction 28, signs told us that the M1 was closed south bound - just as well Kev knows his way around the Kirkby area! Despite the game kicking off 8 minutes late and the diversion through Kirkby, we were still back home by ten past ten.

Clipstone FC 4-2 Grimsby Borough

Tuesday 24th March 2015 - kick off 7:46pm

Venue: The Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone, Notts

Competition: NCEL Division 1

Referee: Mr. Andrew Price

Scorers:
Clipstone - Blake Owen (37,53, 66), Matty Ord (39)
Grimsby - Peter Fuller (48), Kyle Bensley (p 90)

Line-ups
Cobras- Siddons,  Walker,  Paling,  Rawson,  Mintoff,  Robley,  Ord,  Austin,  Smith, Owen,  Mawby. Subs: Hill, Whitehead,  Carrig,  Thomas.

Borough - Johnson,  Hamilton,  King,  Atkin,  Stanley,  Creer,  Ireland,  Fuller, Vaugh,  Fanthorpe. Sub: Sparrow, Pearson, Bensley

Thought about going to the Notts F.A. Sunday Senior Cup final between Nuthall FC and Attenborough Cavaliers, but with goals in mind, I decided to stay with our original choice of game, hoping for a few goals to bolster the charity total. Clipstone are flying high in NCEL Division 1, whilst opponent Grismby had managed to secure only 7 points from their 32 games and are currently rock bottom of the table.  With Kev celebrating his wedding anniversary, I was on my own again. Still sticking him with the £1.50 charity cash for the six goals though!

Greeted inside the ground by Dave Paling and Brett Marshall, and it was good to meet up with good friend Richard "the Wanderer" Lane - always a pleasure to be in this gentleman's company.

Although the games first shot came with only 18 seconds on the clock, Ash Rawson's effort didn't bother visiting keeper Gareth Johnson.  It wasn't until the 25th minute that the keeper was really called into action,  Jamie Smith's header pushed away for a corner.  On the half hour, Rich Mintoff saw his drive well saved, then shortly after that,  Callum Mawby crashed a long range effort against the Grimsby bar.

Clipstone finally broke the deadlock on 37,  BLAKE OWEN slotting home from close range after he was picked out in front of goal.  60 seconds later the home side doubled their lead when a MATTY ORD speculative 22 yard shot was fumbled at his near post by Johnson and the ball crept into the back of the net. H-T 2-0

Before kick off Brett invited myself and Richard into the hospitality area for a drink and a sandwich at half time - plenty of people in there, but I don't think there were any Grimsby officials present.

With two minutes of the second half played, Borough reduced their arrears when PETER FULLER headed over everyone in the area and the ball sailed gracefully into the far corner of the net.

It took just five minutes for Clipstone to restore their two goal lead, another looping header, this time BLAKE OWEN connecting with a throw-in from the right and diverting the ball into the far corner of the net.

Smith then saw his 65th minute back-heel blocked on the line, but Clipstone added to their tally soon after when BLAKE OWEN completed his hat-trick, slamming the ball home after Jonson had dropped Mawby's corner at his feet.

Right on full-time the visitors were awarded a penalty after Rob Paling was adjudged to have handled in the area, and substitute KYLE BENSLEY made no mistake from the spot.  The NCEL site gives the goal to Fuller, but he wasn't even on the pitch after being subbed earlier in proceedings. F-T 4-2

Mansfield Town Ladies 1-0 Loughborough Students WFC

Sunday 22nd April 2015 : kick off 2:00pm

Venue: Rainworth MW,  Kirklington Road,  Rainworth,  Notts

Competition:  F.A. Women's Premier League Midlands Division 1

Scorer: Emma Allen (52)

After watching the Stags Ladies team in action last week, I wasn't going to bother with this game, but "Office Team" John Harris mentioned that he was going to be there to watch his daughter Lucy play, so with nothing better to do, I thought I'd join him.

Shake...

This was so much more enjoyable than last weeks victory over bottom team Curzon Ashton, but at times it took some really solid defending to keep the Students at bay.  Although their visitors were missing several of their regular starters as the Easter break beckons, they looked good on the ball and can count themselves unlucky that they left Rainworth with nothing. They actually beat the Stags 7-1 in the reverse game three weeks ago.

John made a wonderful donation to the "maggie's" fund for which I thank him most sincerely - £0.25 for every goal the Students have scored so far this season.  Table

The pitch at Rainworth is rock-hard and made ball control somewhat difficult, but after a settling down period, both teams came to terms with the conditions. The Students should have gone ahead just before the break,  but their striker struck the ball wide of the post from close range when it seemed that a stooping header would have been a more fruitful option. H-T 0-0

The home team took the lead seven minutes into the second half when corner hit low in from the right sailed past a crowd of players and was met at the far stick with a neat volley from EMMA ALLEN that flew into the net. Despite throwing everything at the Mansfield backline, Loughborough struggled to find a way through the resolute home team defence. They were unlucky not to have been given a penalty late on in the game when Rebecca Davis appeared to handle when she cleared a shot off the line, but the Referee was having none of it - looked a stone-waller to me! F-T 1-0

MTFC Ladies game seen - two, MTFC Ladies games won - two.  There are still three home league games to play:- 8th April v Radcliffe Olympic, 19th April v Leicester City, 26th April v Leafields Athletic. Hope to get to the Sunday games...watch this space!

Kimberley MW 1-2 Aylestone Park

Saturday 21st March 2015 - kick off 3:00pm

Venue: The Stag Ground, Nottingham Road, Kimberley, Notts

Competition: East Midlands counties League

Referee: Mr. Marc Curwood

Scorers:
Welfare - Nathan Kelly (13)
Park - Jordan Small (62), Ben David (80)

Line-ups:

Kimberley MW - Andrew Dell, Roberto Labbate, James Leggitt, Steve Kirkham, Jacob Webster, Josh Stevenson, Lee Stevenson, Mark Smith, Nathan Kelly, Liam Honeyman, Elliott King. Subs: Antonio Wedderburn, Marlon Catwell, Cashel Walters, Orlando Grindley.

Aylestone Park - Nathan Saunt, Denis Darkwah, Kieron Henfrey, Josh Groves, Sam Gent, Ryan Calver, Lavin Camara, Joe Quailey, Lamar Parkes, Jordan Small, Josh Verity. Subs: Mark Preston, Jheryl Lawrence, Ben David.

Not been to the Stag Ground recently, and they have made a few changes to the place since our last visit. Hard standing, new seats, turnstiles, revamped club house. Work is still on-going and will culminate in a couple of years with the building of a brand new £300K facility.

I hope this actually become a reality

The team line-ups were provided by long-time friend Danny Staley - who also made a nice donation to the "maggie's" fund. Thank you very much, buddy.

Here we go...

Shake....

The third team

Aylestone Park were thrashed 5-0 by Kimberley in the reverse fixture last week, so I was hoping for a few more Kimberley goals to keep the charity ball rolling along. It was the visitors though who almost took the lead in the second minute of the game - Jordan Small's shot bringing a neat save from Andrew Dell, the ball pushed over the bar for a corner. Nothing came from the set-piece though, and the home team gradually began to take control of the game.

Nathan Kelly

Kimberley had a real chance to open the scoring on 9, a well rehearsed free-kick routine between James Leggitt and Nathan Kelly culminating with a cross that Elliott King headed just over.

Four minutes later the home team did go ahead when Liam Honeyman lifted the ball into the box from the right and NATHAN KELLY tapped home at the far post. The well travelled striker looked suspiciously off-side, but there was no flag and the goal stood.

On 20, the roles were reversed when Kelly picked out Honeyman at the far stick - unfortunately the ball was driven in a little too
hard and despite a great effort to get there, the Kimberley no. 10 couldn't quite finish off the move.

Aylestone never let their heads drop and were almost level two minutes later when Ryan Calver fired in a free-kick, and Josh Groves just failed to get to the ball as it flew just past him.

Kelly played a neat ball through to Josh Stevenson on the half hour, but Nathan Saunt came out well to block. From the resultant corner Mark Smith headed just wide after it looked easier to score. H-T 1-0

Martin Lench starred for Kimberley last season, and at half-time he reminded me that I had given his goal against Magdala my goal of the season vote. Sadly Lenchy is injured and reckons his playing career may be over. Great goal though, Martin!

Kimberley began the second half on the front foot, and in the 58th minute when Kelly was played in on goal, Saunt did well to tip the effort over the bar for a corner.

Four minutes later, the visitors levelled the scores through JORDAN SMALL - he was given too much room on the left side of the penalty area, and fired the ball across Dell and into the far corner of the goal from a very tight angle.

The already agitated Park bench(!)now became really vocal and Mr. Curwood had occasion to have words. Small had another decent chance on 65, but Dell saved well to keep the scores level.

Mark Smith was played in by Elliott King on 68, as Kimberley tried to regain control of the game, but the Welfare skipper saw his shot fly just wide.

Small was again proving a menace to the home defence and when he picked out Ben David in the 75th minute, Dell did well to smother the substitutes effort. DAVID wasn't to be denied though, and was on hand to fire home five minutes later, after great wing play and a great cross by left-back Kieron Henfry, presented him with a relatively easy tap in.

Aylestone's keeper looking out for crosses?
Attempt at humour.....

Kimberley had a corner as the clock ticked into added time, but even though keeper Dell made a nuisance of himself in the Aylestone area, the visitors defended well and hung on to claim what is only their fourth win of the season - leaving Mr. Staley to bemoan the fact that his team have now lost 31 points from winning positions this season. Wednesday 18th March 2015 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: Grange Park,  Long Eaton, Derbyshire

Competition: Midland Football League Premier Division

Referee: Mr. Simon Brown

Scorers: Stuart Hendrie (45+2), Robson Doolan (55)

Line-ups:

We were pleased that we took in this game - both teams were a credit to their league and produced some fine football throughout the ninety minutes. Table toppers Basford have continued to improve their squad as the season has progressed, their latest addition former Notts County star Ben Fairclough. Fairclough arrived at the ground too late to be considered for a starting place, but came on for a cameo role in the second half.

We had a nice, easy journey down the M1 and arrived at the ground with 10 minutes to spare.  There is plenty of car parking space at Grange Park, so no worries there. Took up a position in the stand, roughly on the half way line, and roughly half way between the Long Eaton video bloke and the Basford video bloke!

I don't think we've seen Referee Simon Brown in action before - he had a stinker in the first half, allowing several crude Long Eaton challenges to go unpunished. Mr. Brown did get the big decision right though, dismissing Gerome Palmer on 89 after the Long Eaton player had aimed a kick at a Basford player.

Both clubs have excellent websites, so I'm not going to try and compete with them. The opening goal was scored in the second minute of first half added time, a well placed shot from STUART HENDRIE that went across Scott Low and nestled in the far corner of the net. H-T 0-1

Pic courtesy Basford Utd Twitter page

The Basford second goal in the 56th minute was a cracker, a spell of neat passing play culminating with a ROBSON DOOLAN finish from close range. Long Eaton added the firepower of Kieren Wells and Shaun Rickford as they strove to get back into the game.  Despite intense pressure from the home team, the Basford defence stood firm, although the Blues were unlucky when Ross Palmer went close with a header and Rickford fired just past the top corner with a couple of minutes of the game remaining.
