AFC Mansfield 5-0 Grimsby Borough

Saturday 28th February 2015 - kick off 3:00pm

Venue: Forest Town Arena, Clipstone Road West, Mansfield, Notts

Competition: NCEL Division 1

Referee: Mr. Josh Bramhall (S.Yorks)

Scorers: Joe Lamplough (10), Glyn Cotton (58, 82), Chris Wood (73), Tristan Whitman (83)

Line-ups:
AFC Mansfield - White, Kitchen, Dudley, Allott, Timmons, Lamplough, Buxton, Cotton, Wood C, Mitchell, Ghaichem. Subs: Naylor D, Brewin, Wilson B, Ward, Whitman

Grimsby Borough - Johnson, King, Wilson, Hall, Unsworth, Bensley, Fuller J, Wood D, Fuller P, Waugh, Flint. Subs: Sparrow, Allenby, Blendell

Change of game - we were scheduled to pay our first visit of the season to Long Eaton, but Kev was helping his daughter to move house so I decided to stay fairly local. Good choice as it happens - Long Eaton lost 1-2 to struggling Heath Hayes.

On entering the ground, I was greeted with a handshake from Andy Saunders - and had a bit of a chat before making my way towards the changing rooms in the hope of grabbing a few words with our long-time friend, AFC boss Rudy Funk. Not seen Rudy for a while, but he seemed  genuinely pleased to see me. He appears to be extremely happy with his current position, and likened the club set up to how it used to be at Eastwood Town when Rudy was assistant to the great Bryan Chambers. What good times they were (on the whole)!

AFC named three debutants in their starting eleven, Joe Lamplough, Chris Wood and Grant Allott. They all played their part in the AFC victory, Lamplough and Wood with a goal apiece, and Allott looking solid at the back.

AFC programme editor/cameraman Pete Craggs has given me permission to use some of his pics from the game, although he  only just remembered to remove the lens cap from his camera as the teams entered the pitch!

The first action of note was a booking for Borough's Danny Wood in the 7th minute, after he went through the back of namesake Chris. It was a nasty challenge that, if it were later in the game, would have surely brought out a more severe punishment.

The long throw of Ashley Kitchen was to pose a threat all afternoon to the Borough defence, and it was one of these throws that lead to the first goal. Launching the ball from the left, it took a deflection towards JOE LAMPLOUGH, and the new boy managed to direct his header over two defenders on the line, before wheeling away in delight as the ball nestled in the back of the net.

Joe Lampough looks happy with his debut goal!! (P. Craggs)

Phil Buxton thought he'd doubled the Bulls' advantage on 26, but his well struck shot from 20 yards crashed against the post before flying away to safety. Grimsby keeper Gareth Johnson did well to parry Glyn Cottons long range effort soon after.

Grimsby  seldom  troubled the home defence, and Jason White had a  relatively comfortable afternoon. The stopper was called into action with three minutes of the half remaining, although he collected Woods' 22 yard free-kick with some ease.  H-T 1-0

Not a very inspiring first half - I was hoping for a few goals to top up the "maggie's" pot, but the home team didn't let me down in the second period, and "maggie's" had benefited to the tune of £3.75 by the end of the game.

GLYN COTTON added the first of the four second half goals, firing home a 22 yard free-kick low and to the visiting keepers left.

Johnson fails to stop Cotton's free-kick entering the net (P. Craggs)

Lamplough had to retire after an hour, but it was a solid debut and showed the home faithful that he will be a great addition to an already quality squad.

Cotton hammered another free-kick against the angle with 65 played, but we had to wait until the 72nd minute for the third goal. A ball down the line from Kitchen was played into the path of CHRIS WOOD by Jimmy Ghaichem, and the striker raced into the box before rounding the keeper and slotting into the empty net.

Another debutant with a goal (P. Craggs)

Tris Whitman has done the rounds of local teams, and within six minutes of entering the game from the bench, had set up the fourth AFC goal. The sub controlled well in the box, before jinking past his marker and picking out an unmarked COTTON in front of goal.

The final goal of the game was easily the pick of the lot, and it was that man TRIS WHITMAN on the mark - a terrific side-step past a defender on the edge of the box followed by a superb, crisply hit shot that flew past Johnson before he could react. Wonderful goal - terrific skill from the journeyman. F-T 5-0

What a hit, Tris! (P. Craggs)

Enjoyed the second half of the game much more than the first, but once again the cold took it's toll and only minimal notes were taken - I do my best!!

Attendance: 71 (not bad with the Stags being at home)
MOM: Glyn Cotton - although I hope his car started ok - he'd left his lights on throughout the game.

Clipstone FC 1-2 Hemwsorth MW

Saturday 21st February 2015 - kick off 3:00 pm

Venue: The Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone, Notts

Competition: NCEL Division 1

Referee: Mr. Cedric Duval

Assistants: Paul Rodgers, Brittany Smith

Scorers:
Clipstone - Matt Ord (61)
Hemwsorth - Adam Wilson (86), Nick Guest (89)

Line-ups:
Cobras - Siddons, Paling, Shaw, Rawson, K Colley, Hill, Mawby, Austin, Gibson, Wood, Ord. Subs: Mintoff, Damms, Whitehead, L Colley, Baugh

Welfare - Bentley, Tonks, Clark, Wilson, Colbear, Steers, Connoly, Crapper, Guest, Blair, Whitehead. Subs: Pugh, Sanden, Viggars, Haywood, Firth.

This was a bitter pill to swallow for all concerned at Clipstone FC - leading 1-0 against promotion rivals Hemsworth with only five minutes to play, only to have it snatched from their grasp right at the death.....

The home team were without suspended top scorer Jamie Smith -  Hemsworth had the divisions highest scorer Nick Guest leading  their  line.

The first 20 minutes were rather cagey, and after Wednesday's drab encounter at Teversal, we hoped the quality would improve as the game went on.

The first corner of the game went to the visitors on 22, but Nick Siddons was able to punch and clear his line. Soon after, Nash Connolly saw his shot across the Clipstone goal flash just past the outside of the far post.

Clipstone striker Josh Gibson had to leave the field on several occasions to have treatment to a head wound - the visiting fans loved it, chanting "he's got a bog roll on his head" when he eventually had to have a bandage wrapped around his head to cover the damage.

Before....

....and after

On Hemwsorth's next foray forward, John Whitehead laid the ball to Dom Blair and the diminutive no. 10 picked out the run of Guest whose shot was well saved by Siddons. Whitehead, Blair and Guest combined well again in the 31st minute, this time Siddons did well to parry Blair's powerful shot.

Rob Paling fired a free kick into the Welfare area soon after, and although Matty Ord struck the ball well enough, Jack Bentley made a fine save to keep the scores level. On 41, Callum Mawby's corner from the right was met with a decent enough header from Josh Gibson, but the striker's effort was off target, flying past the outside of the far post. H-T 0-0

Rob Crapper had the Welfare's first real chance of the second half on 57, and although Siddons somehow managed to scramble the ball away, he ended up picking out Blair, but the keeper was alert enough to save the goal bound effort.

Clipstone took the lead in the 61st minute, and a peach of a goal it was too. Josh Gibson won the ball 20 yards from goal and when he played it out to MATTY ORD on the left, the tricky winger beat his man, raced into the box and fired the ball across Bentley into the far side of the net. Great goal - deserved to win the game, but we all know football is, at times, a hard mistress.

Matty Ord wheels away after putting Clipstone ahead

Welfare began to pile on pressure as they searched for something out of the game, and it seemed inevitable that the home team's defence was going to be breached. The Clipstone back line dropped deeper and deeper, and when Brandon Shaw committed a foul just outside the box on 85, ADAM WILSON fired the ball straight over everyone in the goal area, and probably couldn't believe it when the ball ended up nestling in the far side of the Clipstone net.

Adam Wilson's free kick from the right beats everyone

The afternoon was ruined for the home faithful two minutes later when from a left wing corner, NICK GUEST was allowed space and time to nod home at the far post. F-T 1-2

Nick Guest rises high to nod the winner

Well, at least the traveling fans were happy! Boisterous bunch of young lads, but it was hard not to smile at some of their chanting.

It was a bit chilly for doing this, lads!!

Scorer: Dan Wood (4)

Line-ups:

Rubbish is not a word I like to use when writing about a football game -  after all the players don't intend to serve up such poor fayre as they did tonight when they first enter the field of play.  It has to be said though that this was not a good game by any stretch of the imagination - although Clipstone will probably consider it  a job well done, as this result lifts them to third in the table, two points behind the leaders with three games in hand.

The games only goal was scored in the fourth minute, DAN WOOD heading home a cross from the left. Teversal had a golden chance to level on 43 after Mr. Dutton awarded them a penalty when a Tevie player bounced off a Clipstone defender and went down in a heap.

Justice was done when Dave Cockerill hammered the ball against the underside of the crossbar, and the visiting defenders hacked away the loose ball.  H-T 0-1

Another 45 minutes was played. F-T 0-1

Heanor Town 2-1 Staveley MW

Saturday 14th February 2015 - kick off 3:01pm

Venue: The Town Ground,  Mayfield Avenue, Heanor, Derbyshire

Competition: NCEL Premier Division

Referee: Stuart Richardson

Scorers:
Heanor - Nathan Benger (14), Sam Jones (81)

Staveley -  Ellis Wall (76)

Line-ups:

We've not been to the Town Ground for a while, but this game was  another chance to catch up with my blogging mentor Rob Waite - although his blogging days are limited now due to the extraordinary amount time and effort he spends working with Staveley MWFC. Great to see the big man again, and before we left the Town Ground Kev promised Rob we'd make a trip to Inkersal Road in the near future - we'll see.....

Bought a copy of Tony Squires' excellent matchday programme - nice to see my Hucknall v Pinxton blog entry printed in there, crappy midweek pics included. Any publicity is good - thanks Tony!

With Sean Gregory unavailable for the game, Heanor gave a start to Development squad player 17 year old Olly Naylor -  he had a decent game and certainly looks like one for the future.

Heanor made the early running, and keeper Ian Deakin was hardly call upon in the first 10 minutes or so. The early Town pressure paid dividends in the 14th minute when NATHAN BENGER rose well at the far post to nod home a cross in from the left. The home team almost doubled their advantage on 28 when a Matt Richards corner was headed goalwards by Adie Hawes - unfortunately for the centre-half a defender was well positioned on the line, and the ball was hacked away to safety. H-T 1-0

Benger makes it 1-0

Benger missed a golden opportunity to increase Town's lead three minutes after the restart. A ball in from the right wing to the far stick was headed back across the goal to Benger - the striker controlled beautifully, but hooked the ball over the bar from just inside the six-yard box.

Hawes heads..

Benger controls..

ooops - over the bar she goes!!!

Steve Hernandez in the Staveley goal did well to grab the ball on his line after a right wing free-kick was hacked at by both Town and Welfare players. The assistant ref had a clear view and despite a few Heanor players calling for a goal, it wasn't given.

Hernandez dives to save

Staveley began to get more into the game as the second half progressed, and the only surprise was that it took them until the 76th minute to level the scores, ELLIS WALL firing across Deakin after he was picked out in the area by Brad Jones. Ross Goodwin headed just wide seconds later as Staveley went in search of the winner.

1-1

It was Heanor though who scored the decisive goal on 81. A cracking cross from the left from Town Skipper Chris Shaw was met with a bullet header from SAM JONES. The header however smashed against the bar, but Jones was alert enough to acrobatically  volley the ball over his shoulder and into the back of the net. Great reflexes - great finish. Jahmal Smith was given a straight red by Mr. Richardson on 83 after he went in on Deakin after the keeper had already collected the ball. F-T 2-1

Hucknall Town 1-0 Pinxton FC

Wednesday 22th February 2015 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: Watnall Road Stadium, Hucknall, Notts

Competition: CML Cup

Referee: Mr. Kevin Guise

Scorer: Montell Gatland

Line-ups:

Hucknall - Beddingham, Henry, Pitt, Brown, Atkinson, Leak, Rigg, Aikman, Nelson, Davidson, Maxwell. Subs: Gatland, Dunlop, Crisp, Moran.

Pinxton - Briggs, Bates, Hollingworth, Henshaw, Madin, Smith, Adcock, O'Donnell, Stubley, Bamford, Walker. Subs: Allen, Agbosi, Newman, Summer

31st January was the original date for this tie

We have friends in both camps, so were championing neither - we just wanted a result after 90 minutes, rather than face the dreaded extra-time a draw would have made us endure. The football was  palatable enough, it was just that around 9:00pm it started to get really chilly and we didn't relish the thought of the extra half hour!

It took the players a while to get going, but credit where credit is due, both teams tried to play a passing game, rather than hoof it up field for their centre-forwards to chase. Leon Aikman was pivotal to Town's game, and when he picked out Cayne Maxwell on 23, the winger struck the ball well enough, but could only find the side netting.

Two minutes later we were treated to what will probably go down as the "ontheroad" blog save of the season. Pete Stubley collected the ball out wide and laid into the path of Luke Walker.  The no. 11 raced into the box and unleashed a terrific drive from 12 yards that looked a goal all the way. James Beddingham had other thoughts though, and he arched his back and outstretched his arm superbly to tip the effort onto the bar.  Excellent save - well done, Jimmy.  H-T 0-0

Adam Nelson had a great chance to put the Yellows ahead on 61, after he was played in on goal by Aikman. Unfortunately for the striker, Pinxton keeper Gary Briggs had read the danger and was on hand on the edge of the box to slide in and snuff out the danger.

The games only goal came from an unlikely source. MONTELL GATLAND is not known for his striking prowess, but he had replaced Nelson up top for Hucknall, and when Aikman fed him in the box, the substitute hammered home despite the best efforts of Briggs.

Referee Kev Guise added on five minutes to the end of the game, and for all of those minutes, Pinxton attacked the Town goal relentlessly, but despite having several clear cut chances, the Yellows defence held on and Hucknall progress to the next round.
