Teversal FC 2-5 AFC Emley

Tuesday 30th September - kick off 7:45pm

Venue:  Carnarvon Street, Teversal, Nottinghamshire

Competition: NCEL Division 1

Scorers:
Teversal - Cockerill (18, 60 pen)
Emley - Jerome (47), Kenworthy (58), Ingram (64), Flynn (88), Sykes (90+2)

Referee: Mr. Ricky Taylor

Line-ups:

Fantastic looking team-sheet - this is how it should be done!! 10/10

Teversal remain in 19th postion in NCEL Division 1 after this defeat to the league leaders. The scoreline does flatter the visitors a little - they were actually behind as the teams went in at half time. A great ball in from the right found DAVE COCKERILL who controlled well before firing home with 18 minutes played. H-T 1-0

90 seconds after the restart Emley were level through RUBEN JEROME, the striker hitting a shot from the corner of the box that eluded the dive of home keeper Simon Dye. STEVEN KENWORTHY put AFC ahead for the first time on 58, the simplest of tap-ins at the foot of the post, after the home defence allowed a ball in from the right to travel all the way across the mouth of the goal.

When Kye Pilmore was tripped by AFC keeper Adam Lawlor on the hour mark, COCKRILL restored parity from the penalty spot, the ball hit so hard that Lawlor never even moved as it fizzed past him.

Emley retook the lead two minutes later though, and this was a cracker of a goal! A free kick was awarded on the left of the home penalty area. With the home defence preparing for the customary ball into the 6 yard box, they were taken completely by surprise when the ball was fired along the ground to JOSH INGRAM some 25 yards from goal, and the no. 7 hit a sweet, well placed effort past the despairing dive of keeper Dye and into the top corner of the net.

ASHLEY FLYNN tapped home the visitors fourth from close range on 88, then as the game entered stoppage time, the linesman on the far side flagged for a penalty to the visitors. No-one other than the officials seemed to know why, but AFC skipper PAUL SYKES didn't care as he fired home from 12 yards. F-T 2-5

Heanor Town 1-1 Worksop Town

Saturday 27th September 2014 - kick off 3:02pm

Venue: The Town Ground, Heanor, Derbyshire

Competition: NCEL Premier Division

Scorers:
Heanor - Adrian Hawes (21)
Worksop - Jonathan Wafula (44)

Referee: Mr. Abbas Khan

Line-ups (Heanor had to withdraw Ross Henshaw before kick off - his place in the Lions defence was taken by Marc Strzyzewski)

It's usually fairly easy to find a parking space outside the Town Ground - not for this game though. Ended up parking a long way from the entrance, but with an attendance of 300 this was to be expected. Greeted inside the ground by the Lions' General Manager Scott Ward - thanks for the programme and team sheet, Scott.

Our usual spot in the stand behind the top goal was occupied by Worksop Town supporters, so spent the first half in the stand behind the dugouts, in the company of Heanor Press Officer Tony Squires. Kev couldn't make the game, and I can't take pics to save my life, so I only have a couple of phone camera shots and a video of the handshake to offer....

Kieren Wells was making his home debut for Heanor after he signed recently from Belper Town, and the striker had the home team's first real chance in the 10th minute but headed Nick Hall's cross well over the bar.

Courey Grantham had a shot well blocked by Ben Gathecole just a few seconds later as Heanor kept up the pressure on their visitors' goal. Gathercole did well to save again from Grantham after Gary Ricketts used his strength to win the ball and pick his strike partner.

Andre Johnson broke the Heanor defensive line on 20, and fired in a low drive that Ian Deakin collected comfortably. A minute later the home team took the lead after Worksop conceded a free-kick on the right, some 25 yards from goal. Chris Shaw fired the ball to the back stick, and Ricketts headed back across the goal onto the head of Grantham - and his header was met at the near post by ADRIAN HAWES, and the central defender had the simple task of nodding home.

Worksop almost levelled four minutes later after Johnson once again beat Hawes to the ball. On this occasion Deakin raced out of his area and somehow managed to divert the ball over the bar for a corner.

The away team were now looking dangerous with every attack, and were level with just one minute of the first half remaining. Heanor failed to clear their penalty area after a sustained spell of pressure, and when the ball fell invitingly to JONATHAN WAFULA on the bye-line, he managed to steer it home at the near post,  despite Deakin getting a hand to the shot. H-T 1-1

Finger in the way...come back soon, Kev!!

Both teams had decent chances as the second half progressed, but both Gathercole and Deakin were determined not to be beaten again. Heanor replaced Shaw with Paulo Piliero and Ricketts with   Nathan Benger as the looked to try and take the game to their visitors.

Deakin pilled off a superb diving save to tip over one Worksop effort, then when Connor Sellars played in Chris Winchup on 89, Deakin spread himself well to block the substitutes goal-bound effort. F-T 1-1

Dunkirk FC 1-3 Long Eaton Utd

Tuesday 23rd September 2014 - kick off 7:47pm

Venue: Ron Steel Sports Ground, Dunkirk, Nottingham

Competition: Midland Football League Premier Division

Referee: Mr. Ryan Hayes

Scorers:
Dunkirk - Jarrod Westcarr (44)
United - Jermaine Hollis (51),  Tom Cooper-Richards (56), Lee Fell (61)

Line-ups:

Started off as a very pleasant dry autumn evening, but midway through the first half it began to drizzle - by the end of the game it had developed into a quite heavy shower. Still, there is plenty of cover at Dunkirk so we had no worries about getting drenched.

Spent the first half in the company of Nick "Sticky Palms" Palmer, the second with our friend and regular blog reader, Referee Mr. Eddie Pidduck.  Eddie was assessing the officials. In my eyes they were superb - Mr. Hayes in the middle looked comfortable and in control from the off.

The first half was played at a frantic pace, although all the hustle and bustle provided very few clear cut chances. Dunkirk did go in at the break in front though - JARROD WESTCARR turning on the after-burners to leave his marker in his wake, before side-stepping the onrushing keeper and slotting home. H-T 1-0

Must have been a cracking half time team talk from Charlie Palmer because after the break, his charges pressed hard for the equaliser right from the restart. It took just 6 minutes for United to level. Home keeper Jake Want's poor clearance landed straight at the feet of JERMAINE HOLLIS some 35 yards from goal and the midfielder just simply fired the ball back from whence it had come, leaving the keeper stranded on the edge of his box.

It got worse for Want five minutes later when he allowed TOM COOPER-RICHARDS to get in front of him at the near post to volley home Phil Summerfield's perfect left wing cross.

LEE FELL had replaced Shaun Rickford during the break, and the tall striker grabbed the third Long Eaton goal on 61, volleying the ball home superbly through a crowded penalty area.

So, a ten minute triple for the visitors, but that was the end of the scoring, and the result lifted the Derbyshire outfit to top spot in the MFL. F-T 1-3

Selston FC 5-1 Wollaton FC

Saturday 20th September 2014 - kick off 3:00pm

Venue: The Parish Hall Ground, Selston, Notts

Competition: NSL Senior Division

Referee: Mr. Graeme Mitchell

Scorers:
Selston - Airey (46 pen, 62 pen, 75 pen, 76), Carraher (88)
Wollaton - Alls (23 pen)

Line ups:

Selston move up to second place in the NSL Senior Division after this win over in form Wollaton. Looks like being a terrific division this season. Cotgrave currently lead, with Wollaton third - but they all need to be aware of a very strong looking West Bridgford team - they've played only four games so far, but have won them all.

Craig Langton

We were surprised to see that Craig Langton was taking a line, but were delighted when he made a nice contribution to the "maggie's" fund. Along with the £64.00 "ice bucket" money Kev handed me earlier, Craig's gift lifted us over the £300.00 mark, and we haven't seen out September yet! I will post an updated list of all the contributors very soon - thanks everyone!!

Please remember that the players write the story, I just try to put their deeds into words - and with so much happening on the pitch, I hope I can do the game justice!!

Selston keeper Jake Simpson made the games first save in the first minute, as Wollaton poured forward in numbers straight from the kick off.

Perry Marriott and Lee Day had a few words with each other soon after - not the last confrontation we were going to witness! Ben Moore had a great chance to put Selston ahead on 12, but lifted the ball high and wide from the edge of the box.

Simpson had to be alert to palm away a Wollaton free-kick with 15 played - all the players in the six-yard area had missed the set-piece, and the ball looked to be heading straight into the goal until the keeper's timely intervention.

Great save

Midway through the half, Sean Gregory headed just over from Dom Airey's cross, but on their next attack, Wollaton were given the chance to take the lead after Jordan Alls ran into Sean Gregory in the area and Mr. Mitchell awarded a penalty. ALLS hammered home the spot kick with some power, Simpson no chance.

Alls was involved in the games next incident, but this time he was the victim of a two-footed challenge from Marriott that gave the Referee little option other than to dismiss the Selston no. 5. It could be said that the ball was there to be won, but this was a dangerous challenge that left Alls lying in a heap on the deck.

On 38, Jamie Renshaw also made a two-footed challenge, but made little contact with the Wollaton player, and fortunately for the home team, received merely a yellow. H-T 0-1

I have no idea what Selston boss Karl Steed said to his charges during the break, but the 10 men were certainly firing on all six as  the second period began.

Turner brought down Sean Gregory within a minute of the restart, the keeper failing to catch a ball into the box, and tripping Gregory as he latched onto the loose ball.

DOMINIC AIREY smashed the ball to Turner's right - despite the keeper getting a hand to the ball, it was struck with enough power to bulge the net and bring the scores level.

Damien James had a decent chance to put the home team ahead seconds later, but mis-hit his kick when clear on goal. Lee Day was then allowed to run one-on-one with Simpson, but the keeper spread his arms and legs forcing the striker to aim at the far post - unfortunately for the no. 10 the ball flew the wrong side of the post and the chance was lost.

Day goes close....

On 50, Gregory made a run down the right before cutting in and smashing a shot into the side netting, and 10 minutes later Steve Smith fired at Turner when Airey picked him out in front of goal.

....as does Smith

Gregory appeared to be tripped as he raced into the box again with 57 played, but although it looked a penalty all the way, Mr. Mitchell showed the Selston midfield player a yellow, for what I can only assume was "simulation".

He dived, Ref!!

Gregory was proving to be a pain in the backside for the Wollaton defence, and when Turner brought him down again on 62, not only was the penalty awarded, Mr. Mitchell also showed the keeper his second yellow, followed by the inevitable red.

Turner's replacement was given no chance as AIREY fired home to give Selston the lead. Airey missed a glorious chance to complete his hat-trick in the 72nd minute, but could only fire tamely at the stand in keeper.

When Aaron Mitchell threw his arm around Gregory's neck on 75, AIREY did grab his third, again from the spot, blasting the ball past the keeper before he could react.

AIREY grabbed his and Selston's fourth a few seconds later, a magnificent through ball from the back by Gary Breach dispatched firmly with the outside of his right foot.

Airey's fourth

The fifth goal was nodded home by DOMINIC CARRAHER with two minutes left to play, the sub picked out at the far post by a neat cross from MOM Airey. F-T 5-2

Carraher completing the nap hand

I was asked to mention our good friend, Selston left-back Jamie Renshaw's charge into the box and tame shot towards the end of the game, but I'll not bother!

6 goals, 4 penalties, 2 dismissals - umpteen yellows. A busy day for the Officials!!

MOM: Dom Airey - tireless running throughout, and four goals to his name. Sean Gregory could argue he did enough to be MOM, but the four goals just shaded it in favour of Airey.

It's always good to see a report from this blog in a match programme - any time Danny - feel free.

Went to the Stag on my own as Kev had family business to attend to, but I wasn't "Billy No Mates" on this occasion. West Bridgford boss Gary Hayward joined me for the majority of the first half, and it was good to spend some time in the company of one of one of ontheroad's Referee friends, Mr. Eddie Pidduck. Thanks for your continued support Eddie, and thanks for the charity contribution - again.

Spent some time with Brian Franks as well. It's always good to chat with Brian - he and Gary know the non-league game inside and out and it's always worth listening to what they have to say.

Kimberley were unbeaten in the EMCL before kick off, and Borrowash had won their last five, so it looked as if it was going to be a tight game.

The home team took the lead in the 12th minute - a poor  clearance from Miners' keeper Harry Daykin somehow found it's way through to ANTHONY GREGORY, and the striker raced in one-on-one with Mark Frost before sliding the ball to the keepers right and into the net.

The lead lasted barely 5 minutes though, and the leveller was a goal to savour. The home defence struggled to clear their area, an allowed ROSS COXON enough time and space to turn and curl a stunning effort right into the top corner.  Superb technique. H-T 1-1

I found £1.05 behind the goal at half-time - whoever lost it should be comforted by the fact that it's gone into the charity pot! I didn't take many notes during the second period, so apologies if this second half report is a little brief.

Lee Stevenson was issued a yellow card on the hour mark, he had been booked midway through the first half for making a rash challenge, so knew he had to be careful with his tackling. One too many fouls and Mr. Watts ran out of patience and issued the second yellow followed by the inevitable red.

Kimberley re-took the lead on 66 when MARK SMITH was allowed to run in one-on-one with Frost, the no. 10 making no mistake from 12 yards out.

With 3 minutes of added time played, Liam Honeyman should have wrapped up the points for the Miners, but when Martin Lench found him dead centre, six yards in front of goal, the sub hit his shot straight at Frost.

Could have proved costly as when Borrowash countered, a shot from the left sizzled past Daykin, but fortunately for the Miners, just wide of the far stick. F-T 2-1

Gedling MW 0-2 Stapenhill FC

Tuesday 16th September 2014 - kick off 7:45pm

Venue: Plains Road, Mapperley, Nottingham.

Competition: EMCL

Referee: Martin Edwards

Scorers: Jamie Disney (47), Matt Weightman (48)

Line-ups:
Ian Williams - thank you for the team sheet

We enjoy our visits to Plains Road, although the football often leaves a lot to be desired! So it was tonight as the Miners welcomed Derbyshire outfit Stapenhill FC - and ended the game with nothing. Two quick goals after the break were enough to give the visitors the three points, but they can thank keeper Ben Gough for producing two spectacular, top drawer saves midway through the second half that kept their lead intact.

Nice programme - full colour - thanks again, Ian!

Gedling should have taken the lead early on in proceedings, but squandered umpteen decent chances. It seems that they can create plenty, but lack that killer touch up front.

Stapenhill appeared to be a little suspect at the back and looked to be there for the taking, but the home team failed to capitalise on some poor defending and we went in at the break goal-less.

Gedling midfield player Kelvin Mushambi joined us after the break.  He is currently on the injured list, but hopes to be back in action very soon. We had a great time reminiscing about our friendship - it certainly stretches back a while! Thanks for the charity contribution, Mushy - top man, great friend.

He was not too happy when his team conceded two quick goals straight from the restart. The first came with only 90 seconds played, a move down the right culminating with a low drive from JAMIE DISNEY  flying across Danby into the far corner.

The second came just a minute later, this time Danby deciding to race out of his area to try and close the ball down, but MATT WEIGHTMAN saw him coming and gently lobbed the ball over him and into the gaping, open goal.

Gedling tried to get back into the game, but buoyed by their two goal advantage the visiting defence worked hard to keep the home team at bay - even when chances fell to the Miners, they found Ben Gough a tough nut to crack. One save in particular from Jevon Seaton was superb, the keeper tipping the ball over as it looked destined to hit the top corner.

Overall, not a very good game, but as I said earlier we enjoy visiting Plains Road and we will be going back soon. F-T 0-2

Match no. 2

Venue: Church Lane, Linby, Notts

Competition: CML South Division

Scorers:
Linby - Damian Mann (60)
Pinxton - Jake Vernon 37)

Referee: Paul Buck

Line-ups:-

Linby - Rocco, Frizelle, Coupe, Winfield, Loydall, Henshaw T, Mitchell R, Fox, Murphy, Butler, Mann.
Pinxton - Fisher, Parker, Hollingworth, Bamford, Madin, Henshaw D, Rowley, Smith, Vernon, Ellis, Shelton.

Waste of time me even trying to get decent pics!

Much better - thanks Rob Campion!

With good friends in both camps, this was a bit awkward for yours truly. As it transpired, a point apiece was a fair result - both teams played some scintillating stuff at times, with Pinxton shading the first half and their hosts the second.

Kev was away at the coast, so no action pictures - no good me even trying, I know my limitations! Leicestershire hopper Rob Campion was my company for the game - he took loads of images with his whopping great camera - please click here to check them out.

Ben Newman has been rebuilding the Pinxton team - I used to know all their players, but for this game only Nathan Hollingworth, Josh Parker, Jason Fisher and Jake Vernon were known to me! Linby were still without injured midfield general Aaron Ryan, but seem to have a fairly settled side.

The home team had a chance with 11 played, but Tom Coupe's shot flew just over, then Pinxton were unlucky on 16 when Adam Fox cleared an effort off the line.

Jason Fisher made a spectacular save two minutes later, diving to push away Joe Butler's fierce drive. Luca Rocco in the Linby net was called into action on 20, first saving from Jake Vernon, before punching away the resultant spot kick whilst under severe pressure.

Josh Parker clears under pressure (Rob Campion)

Chris Shelton should have broken the deadlock a few seconds later, but headed Anthony Rowley's near perfect cross wide of the far post with the goal gaping.

Coupe was lucky to stay on the pitch after he made a reckless challenge that left Kurtis Bamford lying in a heap. Referee Mr. Buck deemed the two footed challenge to be only a bookable offence, but I think Coupe must have been relieved the card was only yellow.

Lucky boy....

Matt Murphy saw his effort on 31 fly just over the Pinxton bar and at the other end Mason Frizelle had to be alert to hack Vernon's diving header off the Linby line.

Pinxton took a well deserved lead with 8 minutes of the first half remaining, Shelton drawing Coupe out of position allowing Rowley the space to slide a perfect ball into the path of Jake Vernon, who had the relatively simple task of helping it on it's way into the net.

Vernon fires Pinxton ahead (Rob Campion)

In added time, Mann and Murphy combined well to set up a chance for Adam Fox, and only another superb save by Fisher saw the visitors go in ahead at the break. H-T 0-1

Butler glanced a header wide of the upright as Linby poured forward from the restart and the home team would have been level on 54 if not for another Fisher save, this time tipping over Mason Frizelle's close range header.

Coupe headed over the bar as well four minutes later, but Damian Mann found the target with his head on the hour mark, looping the ball over the outstretched arms of Fisher from 12 yards out. The diminutive winger had never previously scored with his head in his entire career, so was obviously delighted - and sported a grin from ear to ear as the teams lined up to restart the game!

Flying winger Damian Mann in action (Rob Campion)

Tom Ellis was booked for a poor tackle on Coupe, and Mann also received a yellow for dissent after Murphy had been upended on the edge of the box. There were plenty of attacking moves from both teams as the half went on, but the defences were in top form and there were no further additions to the score. F-T 1-1

South Normanton Athletic 2-1 Greenwood Meadows

Wednesday 10th September 2014 - kick off 7:47pm

Venue: M J Robinson Structures Arena, Lees Lane, South Normanton, Derbyshire

Competition: East Midlands Counties League

Scorers:
Shiners - Shane Newton (12 pen, 38)
Greenwood - Lance Stimpson (29)

Referee: David Fields

Line-ups:
Shiners - Steve Smith, Ryan Granger, Sam Keenan, Danny Roberts, Andy Mottershead, Gwinnutt Brandon, Joe Mansfield,  Tom Leighton, Shane Newton, Mike Thorpe, Anthony Fay

Greenwood - Luke Wesley, Ryan Sofee,  Ethan Aitken,  Kye Hall,  Mark White, Tom Scott, Patrick Branagan, Ashley Chadwell,  Karl Darkwa,  Jordan Jackson,  Lance Stimpson

The Shiners went to the top of the EMCL table with this win, but they were made to battle for the points by a Greenwood team that is still rebuilding after losing the majority of it's players in recent weeks. Watched the game in the company of Lance Henderson and Adam Gregory - Adam's brother Sean joined us at half-time.

Greenwood dominated the early play but in the 12th minute defender Kye Hall launched Ant Fay into the air inside the box, giving Referee David Fields little option other than to award a penalty. We thought a sending off would follow, but the Referee  issued just a yellow. Shane Newton stepped up and curled the spot kick past Luke Wesley to give the home team the lead.

Lance Stimpson was pulled up by Mr. Fields for having black tape on his orange stockings. This merits a yellow apparently - although why it took so long for the official to spot this kit faux pas, only he will know. Why the player wore the tape in the first place is also a mystery - surely everyone knows this rule, even though it is a bit silly!!

It was Stimpson who levelled the scores on 29, pouncing on the loose ball after Danny Roberts completely miskicked his attempted clearance in front of goal.

Roberts went from villain to hero with 7 to go before the break, his long throw into the box hammered home by Newton after it caused all kinds of panic in the visitors' six yard box. H-T 2-1

The second half was not a spectacle, but the Greenwood keeper was forced to make several saves as the home team looked to increase their advantage - Fay had a rocket shot well saved on 50, and Newton crashed a header against the bar with 67 played.

Hall made another rash challenge on 80, and was given his second yellow and an early trip to the showers. Wesley spread himself well to block another Fay effort with his legs in the 88th minute, but there there were to be no more goals -although there was another red card shown after the final whistle - Stimpson on the receiving end. No idea why - I had already left the ground! F-T 2-1
