Double header - double cash!!

Saturday 6th September 2014

As this was Non League Day, I thought I'd be clever and double the charity cash for goals to £0.50. With eleven goals to report, we will be adding £16.50 to the fund - me and my big mouth! Brett Marshall and John Ramshaw also made contributions to the pot, which means we have cracked the £200.00 mark already!

Game 1

Kick off 11:00am

Mansfield Town Youth 1-3 Scunthorpe Utd Youth

Venue: Worksop Van Hire Stadium, Clipstone, Notts

Competition: Football League Youth Alliance - North East

Scorers: not known at the moment

Line-ups: not known

This game was a very tight affair in the first half, with both sets of defenders holding the upper hand. H-T 0-0

Scunthorpe went ahead with four minutes of the second half played, their no. 9 smashing the ball home through a crowd of players from just inside the box. The Iron went further ahead five minutes later, this time the no. 9 had his shot well saved by the Stags' keeper, but when a defender tried to clear the loose ball, he was off balance and only managed to steer the ball into the back of the net.

The home team halved the deficit with 71 played, Chris Spencer's free-kick crashed off the bar, and the ball fell straight to the feet of a team mate who gleefully jabbed it home.

Scunthorpe added their third on 85. Their 9 tried his luck from an acute angle - and although his shot was slightly off target the ball hit his strike partner in front of goal and deflected into the net. F-T 1-3

£2 for a CML programme? Really?

We arrived at Coronation Park very early - but this gave us chance to have a chat with a few friends, old and new. Great to see Pat Farrell again - been a few years since we last met. Nice to catch up with Premier League snapper Dan Westwell as well. So pleased that Dan has made the grade after cutting his teeth at Field Mill all those years ago.

Caught up with John Adams, Paul and Maurice McFarland and Stags mad Scotty Annable before the game kicked off - there was a slight delay due to their being (I assume) dog crap in the centre circle. (Been advised subsequently that it was fox crap.

Eastwood won a corner 30 seconds after they had kicked off, but it wasn't the start of something wonderful, trust me! Real's 9, 10 and 11 caused all sorts of problems for the Eastwood back line - but to be fair they weren't helped at all by their midfield players who lost the ball on every occasion it was given to them.

Real opened their account on 15 when their Jerome O'Connor sent the ball across the goal and Dan Williams mis-kicked horribly, allowing Tyrell Shannon-Lewis a free shot from just a few yards out.

0-1

Oh no! What have I done? Thanks go to Dan Westwell for the pic!

Eastwood's first real chance of the half came on 35 - their no. 10 seeing his shot well blocked by the United keeper. Rhys Watkinson in the Eastwood goal made a great save from O'Connor soon after, blocking well at the near post.

The keeper was beaten again in the 39th minute, Shannon-Lewis allowed time to run into the box and rounding Watkinson before slotting home. Dan Williams had the opportunity to open the home teams account on 42, but blazed an easy chance high and wide. H-T 0-2

0-2

United added to their tally on 53. Dean Haynes had made a pacy run into the box, and it appeared that Watkinson had claimed the ball at the defender's feet. Unfortunately for the keeper he couldn't hold onto it under pressure, and the loose ball fell kindly to Jerome O'Connor who calmly slid it into the empty net. Was it a foul on the keeper? Could be construed as such, I suppose, but the Referee and his assistant saw nothing untoward in the challenge.

Haynes scored the fourth on 69, tapping home after Lewis had crossed in from the right. With 5 to play, Watkinson was left stranded out of his goal thanks to a poor back pass - and Luke Attenborough had the simple task of gently lifting the ball over Eastwood custodian to notch the visitors' fifth.

0-4

On 89, the Real no. 4 was clear in on goal and although Watkinson saved the initial effort, Jourdan Blair was on hand to slam the loose ball into the roof of the net. Shannon-Lewis added the 7th from 25 yards in the fifth minute of added time, completing his personal treble. F-T 0-7
