Newark more than held their own at AFC Mansfield last week, and only conceded an equaliser in the 93rd minute. This opposition was a different kettle of fish completely, outplaying and outclassing them from the off.
The majority of the Ilkeston team have been together for a couple of seasons, but the team has also been strengthened by the addition of players from the likes of Nottingham Forest, Coventry City and Burton Albion. Several of their number have also played for the first team in the Northern Premier league, whilst none of the Newark lads are even signed on with their first team.

Ilkeston had already made short work of Mickleover Sports and Heanor Town (5-1 and 6-0 respectively), and although they look like they score for fun, what can they learn from such a one sided game? Their keeper only touched the ball once in the first half, and never had to make a save in the second, whilst the back line had hardly any chance to show off their defensive skills.
Admittedly, Newark made a few forays into the Ilkeston half in the second period, but not enough to cause the home team any problems at all. I suppose only conceeding four times in the second half was an improvement on the first, but this Ilkeston team are top class and in all honesty, the full-time score could have been 20-0.
The visitors conceded a penalty with only 20 seconds played, and although keeper Ajaz Janfaro got a hand to the spot kick, JAKE MULRANEY had hit the ball hard and despite the touch, it nestled in the back of the net.
RAI SIMONS missed a sitter 60 seconds after the restart, skying over from just a couple of yards out. He didn't let the miss upset him though, and he made amends on 7, curling the ball into the far corner from the left side of the box.
SIMONS was on the mark again 17, driving home from 20 yards. The keeper could maybe have done better, but it was a decent hit from the no. 9.
Seconds later MULRANEY found himself with time and space in the box and delicately chipped the ball over Janfaro. It was 5-0 in the 20th minute, DANNY GORDON driving the ball across the goal from the left and seeing it fly in off the post.
ASHLEY HUNTER headed home a Keiran Wallace left wing cross ten minutes later, then HUNTER notched his second a few minutes later, taping in from close range.
WALLACE hit a sweet, dipping 20 yard free-kick home with 39 played, and before the break, both HUNTER (42) and MULRANEY (44) completed their personal trebles. H-T 10-0
Hunter and Mulraney were withdrawn at the break, replaced by Goran Seymour and Jurelle Philips. It was PHILIPS who added the next Ilkeston goal, heading home from a right wing corner.
GORAN SEYMOUR played for Long Eaton at Heanor the other week - he had a poor game on that occasion, but is undoubtedly a great prospect. His goal came after Eli Bako had left the Newark centre-half for dead and crossed to the far stick giving the sub a simple tap in.
Seymour had a fierce drive well parried by the Newark keeper, but PHILIPS reacted quicker than the visiting defenders and rammed home the loose ball. BAKO smashed the ball into the top corner from 25+ yards with 6 minutes to play, a superb goal to round off a magnificent display by the home team. F-T 14-0
